Hullo Atuldom
Today’s song is from a film called ‘College Girl’ from 1978. It is produced by Shantilal Soni and directed by SD Narang. The star cast includes Sachin, Bindiya Goswami, Rita Bhadhuri, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Urmilla Bhatt, Paintal, Bhagwan, Heena Kausar, Sudhir, Shobhana Shah, Jagdish Raj, Karan Diwan, Chand Usmani amongst others.
The film has seven songs of which the most famous is “Pyar Manga Hai Tumhi Se Na Inkaar Karo” which is sung by Kishore Kumar and written by Indeevar. This is already posted on our blog. Another song by Mohd. Rafi “Phoolon Ki Tarah Wo Hansti Thi” which is penned by Dev Kohli has also been posted. And I agree with Atul ji, as he has written in that post – “If Bappi Lahiri’s songs like this did not get popular then one should not blame him for later on composing songs of the nature that required less creativity but yielded rich dividends for him.”
Now here is the third song from the movie. This is another surprise from Bappi Lahiri. First, it is a bhajan and he has Bharat Vyas (!!!) as the lyricist. Ok it is in Yesudas’s voice, not surprising as Yesudas has sung for Bappi Lahiri in ‘Lahu Ke Do Rang’ and ‘Haisiyat’. But when I came across this song the surprises didn’t end. The song is lip-synced by Dr. Shriram Lagoo. I can think of only one or two other movies where Shriram Lagoo has had songs to lip sync – one in ‘Dooriyan – “Khota Paisa Nahin Chalega” (playback by KN Sharma) and the other in ‘Kinaara’ – “Meethe Bol Boley Boley Paayaliya“(playback by Bhupinder).
The bhajan starts at the home and then the family proceeds to a temple which reminds me of a temple attached to an ashram in Mumbai’s Vile Parle area, which I have frequented a number of times before marriage. It was a very peaceful place with lot of space for us children to run about. Going by what we see in the song it looks like Bindiya is sad about something as her eyes are constantly moist and Rita Bhadhuri looks like the more playful of the two sisters. Chandrani Mukherjee’s is the female voice in this song.
Yesterday, 10th January was Yesudas’ birthday. He turned 77. He is a maestro of classical music and is a huge fan of his guru Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Dr. M Balamurali Krishna and Mohd Rafi. Having started his playback career in the 60s in Malayalam followed by the other South Indian languages his Hindi debut came in 1971; though the first movie that released with a song sung by him is ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ in 1976 followed by ‘Chitchor’. He then went on to sing for many Bollywood movies. He has been awarded the Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He has won the national award seven times for best playback singing. He has sung in almost all Indian languages except Konkani, Assamese and Kashmiri. Just as the “Venkateswara Suprabhatam”, the good morning shloka played at Balaji temple in Tirupathi, is associated with MS Subbalakshmi, “Harivarasanam” – the good night shloka played at Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala – is in the voice of KJ Yesudas.
Wishing a belated happy birthday to the ‘Gana Gandharva Dasettan’, as the Malayalees love to address him, alias Yesudas.
