Today’s song is from the movie ‘Kaamnaa’ (1972). I had never heard of this movie earlier. I became aware of this movie only through HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980).

The film is directed by K Chatterjee for I.M.K. Films, Bombay. The star cast as listed in Geet Kosh includes Suma, Dinesh Rai, Sajan, Sonal, Darpan, Shambhu Mukherjee, Kailash Sharma, Gopal Bhatnagar, Ranjana, Usha, Sarita Devi, Preetam, Prem Roop, Samajeet, Prakash, Sudhanshu, Anil, Shyam, Manik, Sadanand, Udayveer, Prem, Mirchandani, BK Mukherjee, Sudhir, Satish, Namdev, Awasthi, Krishna, Satyadeep, and others. Anupama had a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.07.1972

This movie has three songs written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed to music by Usha Khanna. The list of songs in this movie is as given below (as provided in HFGK).

SNo Song Title Singer/s
01 Tum Kabhi Saamne Aa Jaao To Poochhoon Tumse Pankaj Udhas
02 Tori Nathani Kaahe Haale Doley Ri Usha Khanna, Chitra Singh
03 Main Aankhen Moond Ke So Jaaun Chandrani Mukherjee

I have not watched this movie so can’t say much about it. Today’s song is sung by Usha Khanna and Chitra Singh and picturised on two actresses whom I am unable to identify, and many other artistes are seen in the picturisation of this song.
[Ed Note: The two dancers are Anupama (in orange dress) and Habiba Rehman (in blue dress). Thanks to Prakash ji for the identification.]

Here is the alphabetical list of movies of 1972 up to today’s movie, which is the 61st film in this list.
[Ed Note: In the interest of brevity, the list is collapsed to show the films onward from the previous episode in the series , namely ‘Gaaon Hamaara Shehar Tumhaara’ plus the ones that are without any available information or songs. Readers may refer to previous episodes of this series for earlier details – “Nai Hawa Mein Udne Dekho Ban Ka Mor Chala“.]

Note: – Songs for ‘Bachche Mere Saathi’, ‘Gunfighter Johny’ and ‘Hunterwaali’ seems to be unavailable as of now. And there is no information about the songs in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) for the movies – ‘Aakraant’, ‘Bharat Darshan’, ‘Fighter Sheela’ and ‘Jaadoo Nagari’ as mentioned above.

Today’s song from the movie ‘Kaamnaa’ is sung by Usha Khanna and Chitra Singh. Music is composed by Usha Khanna. The video and audio versions have common ‘first stanza’ of the song but the second stanza in both the version is different.

As mentioned above I am unable to identify the artistes. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now enjoy the today’s lovely song…

Today’s song is from the 197’ movie ‘Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche’.

I vaguely remember that when I was still a child our senior friends used to discuss about this movie. In the ‘horror’ ‘genre’ of movies, this movie was a first of its kind I think (knowledgeable readers can throw light on this). This was the first by Ramsay Brothers in the horror category.

This movie is a making a debut on the blog today, and it is one of the movies from the year 1972 that was missing from the blog till now. Alphabetically this is the 38th movie of 1972 as per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). Following are the details.

Making a debut on the blog today

As mentioned earlier, from the above list of movies songs for ‘Aakraant’, ‘Bachche Mere Saathi’ and ‘Bharat Darshan’ seems to be unavailable as of now.

‘Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche’ was directed by R Tulsi Shyam for Ramsay Film, Bombay. This was a suspense movie. It had Surendra Kumar, Pooja, Imtiaz, Shobhna (New Discovery), Satyen Kappu, Smita, Mayank, Habib, Dhoomal and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.08.1972.

This movie had three songs written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed to music by Sapan-Jagmohan. The list of songs in this movie is as given below (as provided in HFGK).

SNo Song Title Singer/s
01 Main hoon teri joganiya shyam, Vani Jairam
02 Ik panchhi ban ke main udti jaaun, Vani Jairam
03 Pii kea aye gharwa bedardi aadhi aadhi raat Asha Bhonsle

I guess that today’s song is on screen performed by actress Shobhna. Also seen in the picturisation is one actor and few child artists who I am unable to identify. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now listen to the today’s song …

With the today’s song the movie ‘Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche’ makes its debut on the blog.

chupke se kho gaya. . .

Searching through his list of songs, I chanced upon this gem of a melodious creation – one of those ‘love at first hear’ type songs that I have really come across after so many days. It has been sitting in my collection forever, and I pulled it today, looking for an unheard or less heard song to include in this post. The composition is quite atypical with a different sound structure attempted. A beautiful melody that I am sure you will also fall in love with.

Remembering C Arjun today, on the anniversary of his passing away (30 April, 1992).

Preparation for this post started a couple of days ago. And in the interim, the industry and the lovers of Hindi films have been shaken by the news of two luminaries passing away yesterday and today. Yesterday morning we got the news about Irfan Khan, who lost his battle with cancer at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. The emotions are still to settle, and the second shocking news came in today morning. Rishi Kapoor, the darling Chintu Baba of the 1970s and 80s, lost his battle with leukemia at another Mumbai hospital today. Irfan Khan, 53 – too yuong, too early. Rishi Kapoor, 67 – lively, and a lot of life still to go. But alas no, this is the ‘as much’ that was ordained.

As I check out the dates on C Arjun today, when he passed away, he was 59. Just about midway between Irfan and Rishi, in terms of years. The writ of life is no one’s command – it is what it is. We see, we compare, we critique, we like, sometimes we ignore. But then, when the finality of the process dawns upon us, one is left with a vacuum somewhere inside that says – wish there was more. . .

Very little details are available about C Arjun’s life and times. The article in Pankaj Raag’s book dedicated to this music director is almost completely based on his work, the films that he did, and the wonderful songs that he has composed. Other than that, very little about the person himself.

He was born on 1st Sep, 1933 in Sindh. His full name – Arjun Chandnani, which was later modified to be C Arjun, for the sake of brevity in film circles, and to avoid any confusion with the name of his mentor music director Bulo C Rani (full name Bulo Chandirani). After partition, his family moved to and settled in Baroda.

C Arjun’s father was musically inclined and was a singer. There is no information available about his training. In one place, there is anecdotal mention that C Arjun fondly remembers being present at the recording of a song by Noorjehaan in Lahore. This anecdotal nugget does not carry any other details. We read about his career initiation in early 1950s – appearing as assistant music director working with Bulo C Rani, in films like ‘Shikaar’ (1955), ‘Aabroo’ (1956), ‘Baadshah Salaamat’ (1956) and ‘Jeevan Saathi’ (1957).

In 1958 came the hit Sindhi film ‘Abana’. In this film, C Arjun shared the credits for music direction with Bulo C Rani, and not just as an assistant. Then in 1960, he got his first break as an independent music director in Hindi cinema with the film ‘Road No. 303’. His career remained very patchy throughout, despite some of the most wonderful songs and ghazals created by him. The songs gained popularity with the listening public, but that never really translated into more work for him from the producers in the industry. Following is the list of films he has composed for,

  • 1961 Main Aur Mera Bhai
  • 1964 Punarmilan
  • 1965 Ek Saal Pehle
  • 1966 Chale Hain Sasural
  • 1966 Sushila
  • 1967 Lambu In Hong Kong
  • 1970 Mangu Dada
  • 1971 Ustad Pedro
  • 1973 Guru Aur Chela
  • 1975 Jai Santoshi Mata
  • 1976 Raksha Bandhan
  • 1977 Aankh Ka Tara
  • 1977 Subah Zaroor Aayegi (possibly a re-release of Sushila from 1966)
  • 1978 Nawab Saheb
  • 1980 Karva Chauth
  • 1981 Kaanoon Aur Mujrim

Unreleased Films
Sant Valmiki
O Mere Jaan e Jigar
Gunaahon Ka Mandir

Besides these, he also has given music to films in Sindhi, Gujarati and Haryanvi. He also has composed music for non-film albums in Sindhi. He was actually in a recording studio, rehearsing with artists for the recording of a Sindhi non-film album release, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Today’s song is from his debut Hindi film ‘Road No 303’. The film is produced under the banner of Mahesh Pictures, Bombay, by Bheeku Bhai and Ratan Kumar. The film is directed by Dharam Kumar. The star cast is listed as Shobha Khote, Mehmood, Bhagwan, KN Singh, Tiwari, Sheelu, Helen, Altaf, Maqbool, Raju, Mirajkar, Ramlal, Fazlu, Majnu, Joshi, Kashi, S Kerawala, Master Nisar, Bakshi and others.

The film has six songs, equally shared between the songwriters Jaan Nisar Akhtar and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular song is sung by Asha Bhosle. Only the audio of this song is available, and I request our more knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this song, and the movie itself.

A wonderful creation in my opinion. Listen and enjoy.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 8
————————————————

When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I had mentioned it in my comments on the ‘first song’ in this series that, I would try to share lyrics if not articles as possible in this series. I had also mentioned that I could see a few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month. That was because I was browsing the posts of February’2009 on my own.

Today I have this opportunity to share a ‘song post’ under this series. And since its from ‘seventies’ I am happy to share it here.

Ten years back, on this day i.e. on 23rd February 2009, we had songs from the movies ‘Rajkumar-1964’, ‘Milan-1967’, ‘Chor Machaaye Shor-1974’, ‘Call Girl-1974’, ‘Badi Bahan-1949’, and ‘Dushman-1939’ posted on the blog. All the moves mentioned above, except ‘Call Girl-1974’ have already had all their songs posted on the blog and in turn achieved ‘Yippeeee’ ed status on the blog. 🙂

So, we have ‘Call Girl-1974’ remaining to be covered for all songs on the blog. And so far, only one song of this movie has been posted on the blog. And, I think that the one song posted was the only well-known song from the movie or we can say that the movie is identified with this one song only i.e. ‘ulfat me zamaane ki har rasm ko thukraao’ sung by Kishore Kumar.

However, when I was going through the songs available from this movie and song list of this movie in HFGK-Vol-V, I found that the above song is actually a ‘multiple version song’ sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. So, I am also sharing the Lata Version for this song separately and requesting Atul ji to kindly update it in the post please. This song was posted on 23rd February 2009 and there was only comment on it on the same day by Greta Memsaab. The second comment was by Mr. Chandrakant H Shah on 08th Dec’2016 and he had mentioned about this song being a multiple version song. However somehow this has been remained to be updated.

I too remember this song ‘ulfat me zamaane ki har rasm ko thukraao’ as a Kishore Kumar song only and I think the version was not that much popular then. I had not watched this movie until now, so can’t say much about that. Except I vaguely remember to have heard this Kishore Kumar song on radio frequently and thereafter its memory was revived when I had started collecting cassettes in 1985-86. In 1987-88 after the death of Kishore Kumar HMV has released an album titled ‘A tribute to the Legend’ (it was a four-cassette set) and this song was included in this album.

As per HFGK listing of songs of this movie the Lata Mangeshkar version appears first (at number 3 in the movie) and the Kishore Kumar version appears later (at number five in the movie).

‘Call Girl-1974’ was directed by Vijay Kapoor for Mukesh Movies, Bombay. It was produced by Mukesh Khanna.

It had Zahira, Vikram, Iftekhar, Urmila Bhatt, Shekhar Purohit, Minoo Mehtab, Reddi, Mansaram, Satyajeet, Shefali, Jankidas and Kuljeet.
Heena Kausar make a special appearance in this movie.

Jalal Agha and Nazneen, Krishan Dhawan and Paintal have friendly appearances in this movie. Story of this movie was by Mukesh Movies Story Department. Editing of this movie was done by B.S. Glaad. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by K. A. Abbas.

This movie had total seven songs including one multiple version song and one cabaret dance music. All the songs in this movie were written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and music was composed by Sapan-Jagmohan. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Ranu Mukherjee who gave their voices to the songs in this movie had one solo song each, and there was one duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar and one by Kishore Kumar and Ranu Mukherjee.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.05.1974 with restricted viewing certificate (A).

Since I have not watched this movie, I can’t say much about it or the songs from this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar and picturized on Vikram and Zahira.

The song is a nice one though it must not be popular or heard that much as the other song from this movie.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 80 # Paapi-1977 #
————————————————————–

When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I felt excited and browsed through some dates of February 2009 on the blog to check about the songs and the the movies which featured on these dates ten year back.

I also mentioned in my comments on the blog that I would try to contribute as possible for this ‘challenge’ too. However, since I already have few of my earlier articles to be finished and other topics on my list, I could not contribute much to it till now. But I can see few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month 🙂

When I checked the songs posted ten years back for February 9th, I find that all the movies that were represeted that day viz. ‘Kismat-1968’, ‘Jugnu-1973’, ‘Brahmachari-1968’, ‘Sadhna-1958’, ‘Udan Khatola-1955’, ‘Paapi-1953’ and ‘Badi Bahan-1949’ have already been Yippeeeed’ on the blog or all songs from these movies have been covered on the blog.

The name of this movie ‘Paapi-1953’ reminded me of ‘Paapi-1977’. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, its name had been in my vague memory since my childhood and whenever I had been going through HFGK Vol. V, I had always thought of presenting a song from this movie since it belongs to the ‘Seventies’. This would also serve my purpose of ‘introducing the movie with same titles’ on the blog.

On our blog we already have ‘Paapi-1943’ and ‘Paapi-1953’ launched earlier.

Today ‘Paapi-1977’ makes its debut on the blog …

‘Paapi-1977’ was produced and directed by O.P. Ralhan for his home productions ‘Ralhan Productions. Bombay’. O.P. Ralhan also wrote the story and screenplay of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Editing for this movie was done by Vasant Borkar.

It had Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Reena Roy, Prem Chopra, Padma Khanna, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Durga Khote, Jagdish Raj, Jatin, Appi Umrani, Dhanraj, Tuntun, Moolchand, Baby Deepa, Rajan Kapoor, Master Vikas, and Alka with O.P. Ralhan, Kamaldeep, Rajnath, Sheela, Ratan Gaurang, Jawahar Kaul and others.

Danny Dengzongpa makes a special appearance in this movie. Hina Kausar, Manmohan Krishan, Kamal Kapoor, Nana Palsikar, Sudhir makes a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1977.

As per HFGK there are nine songs in this movie written by Naqsh Lyallpuri (five songs), Kulwant Jani (three songs) and Harindranath Chatopadhyay (one song). Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Ranu Mukherji and Miss Lorna had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri. And on listening to few songs from this movie one may think of its composed by Pancham Da, same like the music of ‘Chhaila Babu-1977’ which was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in R.D. Burman style 🙂
I do not remember it, but I don’t think that I had listened to any of the songs from this movie earlier. Except the song that I am presenting today which after listening sound somewhat familiar to me or may be which I had heard on radio earlier. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and lyrics are by Naqsh Lyallpuri.
Also, I think that the songs from this movie may have been forgotten and none of them became popular.

From the nine songs in this movie Lata Mangeshkar has sung as many as four solo songs in this movie. Rafi Saab had one solo, while Mahendra Kapoor had two solo songs, and Ranu Mukherji and Lorna had sung one duet song in this movie.

On listening few times this song grows and I like it too.

Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri as mentioned above.

Since I have not watched this movie, I can’t say much about it or the songs from this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs. Though, going by the star-cast of this movie I think this must be an ‘entertaining’ and ‘interesting to watch’ movie…

Let us now enjoy the today’s song from ‘Paapi-1977’ which is performed on screen by Zeenat Aman and we can see Prem Chopra, Padma Khanna, and others in the picturization of this song …

(Lyrics have been noted down as per the audio link which is a longer link)

शम्मा जले या ना जले ए

Missing Films of 1960s – 63
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Shamma Jali To Jala Parwaana
Pyaar Bana Afsaana. . .

The film, ‘Pyaar Bana Afsaana’ was eventually never released. However the songs were already recorded and released. This song caught the attention of the listening public, and it did become quite a popular memory in the radio listening days.

Remembering Krishna Kalle – three years ago this day, she passed away at the age of 74.

In 1957, when she was declared the winner of a national level singing award for young talent, she received this award from the hands of the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. More awards and recognitions followed in the subsequent years. In 1965, she was honored as the ‘Golden Voice of India’.

In 1960 she joined the All India Radio in Bombay (now Mumbai). However, within three or four years, she made her debut as a playback singer in the film industry. As per Geet Kosh, her first song came in the film ‘Daanveer Karna’ in 1965.  She continued to be active in both the Hindi and Marathi cinema, and has also sung some songs in Kannada films. Given the situation of the industry, this talented young singer did never make it to the top level of playback singing in the industry. She sang over 200 songs in Hindi films in an active career that spanned from mid 1960s to mid 1980s. Besides, she also has to her credit, about 100 songs in the Marathi film. In addition, there are almost another 100 non-film songs and bhajans recorded by her.

Today’s song is from the 1967 film ‘Gunehgaar’. This is a Sheikh Mukhtar film that is produced under the banner of Shimla Productions, and is directed by R Thakar. Besides Sheikh Mukhtar, the star cast is led by Sanjeev Kumar and Kumkum. The other players in this films are Bhagwan, Madan Puri, Uma Dutt, Neelam, Nandini, Tuntun, Sulochana Chatterjee, Lakshmichaya, Kundan, Dilip Dutt, and Tiwari etc.

The story is a typical variation on the Sheikh Mukhtar tales. Shankar (Sheikh Mukhtar) is on the run from the police, for a crime believes he has committed; but actually he himself is mistaken. He flees from village and comes to Bombay, and becomes part of a gang led by Khan (Uma Dutt). Khan is a involved in criminal activities, but he is a man of his word. Shankar’s sister Kum Kum, also comes to Bombay in search of her brother. Sanjeev Kumar is an upright police officer. By a sequence of events, Kum Kum and Sanjeev Kumar meet at the police station, and he takes her to his home, since she has no place to stay. Love blossoms between them. Madan Puri, an old adversary of Shankar from the village, also comes to Bombay, and also starts working for Khan. Some more predictable events happen and then all is sorted out for a happy ending.

Geet Kosh lists 6 songs for this film, three of which are written by Naqsh Lyallpuri, and two by Akhtar Romani. The sixth song does not have a lyricist name mentioned against it. Today’s song is from the pen of Naqsh Lyallpuri. The music direction of this film is by Vedpal.

This is a ‘villain’s den’ song. Kum Kum has reached the adda of Khan. Khan is enamored by her beauty and wants her to dance for him. At first she refuses. He then promises her that no harm whatsoever will come to her and that he takes the responsibility to protect her. Since she has a purpose i.e. to locate her brother, hesitatingly she agrees. And the song follows. The song is delightful and melodious, and a very pleasing listen. When the song ends, Madan Puri makes an entrance. The film is available online, in case you may be curious as to what happens next. 🙂

With this song, the 1967 film ‘Gunehgaar’ makes a debut on our blog today. Enjoy.

Song – Aankhen Pyaasi Lab Hain Pyaase  (Gunehgaar) (1967) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Naqsh Layallpuri, MD – Vedpal

Lyrics

pyaala bhar ke

aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya

masti ka paighaam banin hain
zulfon ki rangeen ghataayen
masti ka paighaam banin hain
zulfon ki rangeen ghataayen
saaz dilon ke chhed rahi hai. . .
paayal ki betaab sadaayen
paayal ki betaab sadaayen
chhed inhin saazon ki dhun par
chhed inhin saazon ki dhun par
naghma naya saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya

aaj utha na koi pyaasa
mehfil ki awaaz yahi hai
aaj utha na koi pyaasa
mehfil ki awaaz yahi hai
jaam pe jaam diye ja saaqi
jeene ka andaaz yahi hai
jeene ka andaaz yahi hai
roz kahaan laati hain raaten
roz kahaan laati hain raaten
aisi fizaa saaqia
sab ko pila saaqiya
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
