Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 4
———————————————————

I have been looking for some rare songs which are generally not available on YT. Some of them are gems which are required to be brought to the notice of the wider section of the admirers of Hindi film music. Thanks to some of the collectors of old Hindi film songs and also thanks to internet technologies, such gems can now be stored in mp3 format and easily shared. One of the websites which has become a kind of a store house of old Hindi film songs in mp3 format is Dr Surjit Singh’s Website. With a large collection, the attendant problem is in searching for the required songs/films. One must be extremely patient in searching for the required songs or films as the records of mp3 clips have not been maintained in any particular order as of now.

“Chaand” songs are always a delight to listen to. In my view, the first “Chaand” song was perhaps the title song of “Chaand”(1944) which I discovered some four years ago. I had discussed this song in the blog at that time.

MAN KI JEET (1944) was one of the most successful films produced by W Z Ahmed under his banner of Shalimar Films. The film had 7 songs including one version song of which 4 songs (including the version song) have been covered in the Blog. Almost all the songs of the film were popular in those days. The highlight of these songs were that for the first time, Shaayar e Inqilaab Josh Malihabadi wrote lyrics for 5 out of 7 songs for the film. The rest of 2 songs were written by Bharat Vyas. The star cast included Shyam, Neena, Tiwari, Prakash, Rajkumari Shukla, Gulab, Mumtaz Begum, Shanta Thakkar, Chukoo etc. This was the debut Hindi film for the actor Shyam. This may also be a debut film for Chukoo on which morey jubna ka dekho ubhaar was picturised. Of course, Sitarabai Kanpuri started her playback singing career with this film.

A common adage in our world is that wisdom comes with age.

A loose Hindi equivalent of this is the statement “ye baal dhoop mein safed nahin hue” (this hair didn’t just grey due to sunshine). The implication is that grey hair (a sign of ageing) equates to wisdom.

The song which I am presenting here is the one which was in my mind for quite some time for posting in this blog. But I was a bit hesitant as I felt that the song was very close to be called a bawdy song and was much more naughtier than say choli ke peechhe kya hai. But the song is so melodiously rendered by the singer that at last, I decided to present this rare song.
