“Samrat Chandragupta”(1958) was a Mukti Films preduction. It was directed by Babubhai Mistry and the star cast included names like Bharat Bhushan, Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, B. M. Vyas, Ullhas, Anwar Hussein, Krishna Kumari, Samra Roy, Dalpat etc.

“Samrat Chandragupta” (1958) was one of those B grade movies that made it big mainly because of its music. Almost all its songs went on to become very popular and some of the songs are remembered to this day. I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie and it includes the evergreen song Chaahe paas ho chaahe door ho .

In ancient days, leading a spartan life was considered desirable and virtuous and seeking a life of pleasures and luxury was considered improper and a sign of decadence. In Indian history, kings who indulged themselves in such activities were looked down upon. The word used for such undesirable activities was “Bhog-Vilaas” ( comfort and pleasure seeking). Yes, seeking a life of comfort was severely disapproved by the visionaries among ancients.
