Mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye

Posted on: August 22, 2010

In ancient days, leading a spartan life was considered desirable and virtuous and seeking a life of pleasures and luxury was considered improper and a sign of decadence. In Indian history, kings who indulged themselves in such activities were looked down upon. The word used for such undesirable activities was “Bhog-Vilaas” ( comfort and pleasure seeking). Yes, seeking a life of comfort was severely disapproved by the visionaries among ancients.

Here is a song from the historical/mythological movie called “Samrat Chandragupta” (1958). The picturisation shows an angry Chanakya shouting “Vilaasi Nand” (Pleasure seeking Nand). Then the scene shifts to Nand’s court where we are treated with the decadent ways of Nand. We find a bevy of dancers led by buxom Sheila Vaz Kammo singing and dancing.

The song is “mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye” which is sung by Lata. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and Kalyanji is the music director. Yes, this was one of the earliest movies of Kalyanji where he composed music solo before he formed his famous partnership with his younger brother Anandji.

What a decadent ruler this Nand was. Just imagine listening to (and watching) a song and dance performed by a group of female dancers ! Thank god, we the members of this blog are not “Vilaasi” like Nand. Chanakya would be proud of us. 😀

Lyrics

Mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
ghata tham jaaye
main nikloon to
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
ghata tham jaaye
main nikloon to
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye

duniyaa mere naaz uthaaye
jhuk jhuk jaaye
mere peechhe peechhe aaye
duniyaa mere naaz uthaaye
jhuk jhuk jaaye
mere peechhe peechhe aaye
mera dil lubhaane ko
koi gaaye
koi muskuraaye
koi gaaye
koi muskuraaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
ghata tham jaaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye

chhaliyon ki galiyon se ghabraaun
ruk ruk jaaun
main to chhup chhup jaaun
chhaliyon ki galiyon se ghabraaun
ruk ruk jaaun
main to chhup chhup jaaun
mera meet kahaan hai
wo jo aaye
aa ke nahin jaaye
jo aaye
aa ke nahin jaaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
mujhe dekh chaand sharmaaye
ghata tham jaaye
main nikloon to
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye
kahe haaye
zamaanaa kahe haaye

atulji,

I was just cheking that this particular lovely dance song was included in the blog or not, but I am relieved, it is there.

But ,she is not sheila vaz, she is again KAMMO(please again check this fact from other knowledgebale persons) ,
Sheila vaz is somewhat short and has chubby cheeks and short mouth,

Sheila vaz is the dancer one appears in CID(leke pehla pehla pyar),Chote nawab(ghar aaja ghir aaye, badra sanwariya)Shri 420(dil ka haal sune or ramaiiya vastavaiyya)

I am not good in recognising old actresses of the past. Even if I may have correctly identified some old actress in one song, there is no guarantee that I will be able to correctly identify her in another song. So I rely on my knowledgeable readers to help correct me. 🙂

The main dancer in this song is Krishna Kumari, who acted as court dancer Chhaya in the movie.
Krishnakumari is the younger daughter of Sowcar Jaanaki, the famous south Heroine.K.Kumari acted in over 80 films,Hindi,Telugu and Tamil. She featured in famous films like Baiju Bawra,Naagin,Dil ek Mandir,Hariyali aur Rasta,Zabak,Yahudi ki Ladki etc in Hindi. Her career spanned from 1951 to 1976.
These days both sisters are retired and settled in Bangalore.

the main dancer`s name is kammo, she acted in PHAGUN(with madhubala), I am 95%sure

One krishnakumari I know, who acted in kannada films like Bhakta kanakadasa alongwith the famous kannada matinee idol raaj kumar

I think it is not krishnakumari, it must be KAMMO

If I remember right,King Nand,in the film,as it goes;is being tempted by the court dancer,Chaaya, who has ambitions of becoming Queen. It is only because of Chaaya,King Nand insults Chanakya and Chanakya,by his ‘koot-neeti,overthrows Nand and makes Chandragupta the King.
Therefore I feel it is Krisnakumari in this dance.

I haven`t seen the film,
but just now I again watched the song, undoubtedly it is Kammo, it is not krishna kumari.
Krishna kumari got a different south indian face and structure of nose and she has got chubby cheeks, I know exactly her facial features, because I am a regular viewer of kannada mythological films, in which she used to be act, she is I think not a trained dancer, but she does have a few dance songs for her credit. She has acted in kannada films as character artiste also

Prakashchandra ji,
Afterall, you may be right.I can not convincingly confirm her identity,as much as you do.Based on her role as court dancer and decked up appearance in the dance it is possible to be misled, like it happened with me.
