Kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun mast nadi ki dhaar

Posted on: January 6, 2011

“Samrat Chandragupta” (1958) was one of those B grade movies that made it big mainly because of its music. Almost all its songs went on to become very popular and some of the songs are remembered to this day. I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie and it includes the evergreen song Chaahe paas ho chaahe door ho .

Here is another song from this movie. It is sung by Lata. Indeewar is the lyricist and Kalyanji is the music director.

Though Nirupa Roy is the lead actress of this movie and she lip synced a few songs in Lata’s voice in this movie, this song is picturised on some other actress. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify her. The hero Bharat Bhushan, playing Samrat Chandragupta, is also visible in the picturisation of this song.
PS-She is Krishna Kumari. She was a well known actress in Tamil and Telugu movies of that era. I thank Sudhir for this information as well as for providing the list of lyricists who wrote the songs of this movie.

Song-Kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun mast nadi ki dhaar (Samrat Chandragupta) (1958) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Kalyanji

Lyrics

kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
main to rukna na jaanoon
main to jhuknaa na jaanoon
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
main to rukna na jaanoon
main to jhuknaa na jaanoon

qaid chaman ki
mujhko na bhaaye
mujhko na bhaaye
mujhko bahaar bhi baandh na paaye
baandh na paaye
apni adaaon se pyaar hai mujhko
pyaar hai mujhko
gaaye
matwaale geet
man ka mera taar taar
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
main to rukna na jaanoon
main to jhuknaa na jaanoon

khoyi ho jaise hirni ban mein
hirni ban mein
badli jaise neel gagan mein
neel gagan mein
khoye huye hon man ki lagan mein
man ki lagan mein
kheloon
main tofaan ke mauzon se baar baar
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
kal kal chhal chhal bahti jaaun
mast nadi ki dhaar
main to rukna na jaanoon
main to jhuknaa na jaanoon
rukna na jaanoon
main to jhuknaa na jaanoon

Atul ji,

Referring back to the credits in the original movie, we find that there are 4 lyricists identified. The names are Bharat Vyas, Hasrat Jaipuri, Indeevar, and (hold your breath) Nirupa Roy. Not only that she was the heroine, she also penned a song for this movie. 🙂

Based on the details from the HMV label, there is a total of 8 songs, and the lyricists are identified as follows:

1. Mujhe Dekh Chand Sharmaaye – Nirupa Roy

2. Ae Dilbar Aa Jaa Aa Jaa – Hasrat Jaipuri

3. Yeh Samaa Hai Mera Dil Jawaan Hai – Hasrat Jaipuri

4. Kal Kal Chhal Chhal Behti Jaaun – Indeevar

5. Rangile Morey Raja Dil Mein Samaa Jaa – Indeevar

6. Chaahe Paas Ho Chaahe Door Ho – Bharat Vyas

7. Bhar Bhar Aayee Akhiyaan Ho – Bharat Vyas

8. Jaa To Se Nahin Boloon – Bharat Vyas

Another interesting fact about this movie. This was the debut movie for Kalyanji Veerji Shah. Kalyanji composed solo for some movies before teaming up with his brother, Anand ji. Their first movies as a team were Madaari and Satta Bazaar in 1959.

Atul ji,

The actress who is singing this song on the screen, is Krishna Kumari. Krishna Kumari is a known actress from Telegu and Tamil film world from 1950s and 60s. She also made some appearances in Hindi movies in the same period, notably Baiju Baawra, Naagin, Samrat Chandragupt and Hariyali Aur Raasta.
