There are two beautiful songs rendered by G M Durrani in ‘Nayi Kahaani’ (1943). Fortunately, video clips of both the songs are available. In the first of the two songs, neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare kitne meethhe kitne pyaare a boy suddenly gets up from the group of musicians and start singing sargam in a ‘rapid fire’ mode and then sits down for the song to continue. He sings sargam in his own voice. Again, in hamen kya ab khizaan jaaye na jaaye , the boy gets up during the musical interlude of the song and starts conducting the orchestra. These are the ‘scene stealer’ situations in the songs which, I am sure, must have remained in the minds of the audience when they came out of the theatre after watching the film. The Voice of Mukesh #51
– – – – – – – – – – – – –

The year 1950 saw the release of 36 songs by Mukesh, from 16 films. (This information is as per the Mukesh Geet Kosh). Of these, we already have 28 songs posted here on this blog. This is the 29th Mukesh song from the year 1950. I am continuing the search for the rest. I have been able to locate five more songs, but two songs are still eluding me. One song is from the film ‘Bebas’ – a solo song “Do Dil Hon Do Dilon Ko Ulfat Ka Sahara Ho”. The second song is from the film ‘Preet Ka Geet’ – a group song along with Zohrabai and Geeta Dutt, “Paayal Bole Re”. I request friends and readers on this blog to kindly share any information about the availability of these songs.

Wow, what a song this one is. I am hearing it for the first time, and it has just taken over my heart and mind. The composition seems to have an earthy simplicity that is just so endearing.

When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians was naturally at its peak. People wanted to forge their own identity and one of the battle cries that was frequently heard those days was to give up wearing Western clothings and wear native clothings. Dressing up western style, applying make up etc was regarded as western and was mocked.
