Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare kitne meethhe kaise pyaare

Posted on: July 7, 2011

Here is an absolute gem of a song that has been lying hidden all these decades.

This song is from “Nayi Kahaani” (1943). I am not only surprised that music lovers have forgotten this song, I am even more surprised at the fact that the print of this movie is still available and that too in a reasonably pristine condition, going by the print quality of this picturisation. So kudos to the people who have preserved the print of this movie in such a good condition.

The picturisation shows a gathering of people seated in a hall and Jairaj singing this song. This song is obviouslty addressed to Rose sitting in the front row and looking pretty. Little is known about her. I guess that she was an Anglo Indian lady who acted in Hindi movies. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on her as well as on this movie.

The song is sung by G M Durrani. after two stanzas of the song, we are treated to a delightful sargam by a young performer called Balak Ram whose mamapadhanisa… is sung at such rapidfire speed that I have been unable to get them properly. I request our readers with keener ears to help us with the proper words uttered by Balak Ram.The young kid certainly steals the show before once again allowing G M Durrani and Jairaj to resume.

This song is written by Wali Sahab and music is composed by Shyam Sundar.

What a wonderful song it is ! It is my privilege to bring this song to the notice of music lovers.

Song-Neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare (Nayi Kahaani) (1943) Singers-G M Durrani, Balak Ram, Lyrics-Wali Sahab, MD-Shyam Sundar

Lyrics

neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare
kitne meethe kaise pyaare
neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare
kitne meethe kaise pyaare
lahron ki
laharon ki godi mein jaise
aankh michauli khelen taare
aankh michauli khelen taare
neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare
kitne meethe kaise pyaare

man donon ke khil jaane do
ik dooje se mil jaane do
man donon ke khil jaane do
ik dooje se mil jaane do
dekhte hain bechain bechaare
nain tumhaare neer hamaare
neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare
kitne meethe kaise pyaare

mamapadhanisa
nisa dhanipa
?????
nidhapa

neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare
kitne meethe kaise pyaare
nargis ko sharmaate hain wo
jal mein aag lagaate hain ye
nargis ko sharmaate hain wo
jal mein aag lagaate hain ye
donon hain badnaam bechaare
zakhm hamaare teer tumhaare
neend hamaari khwaab tumhaare
kitne meethe
kaise pyaare

After 4 decades, G M Durrani sang this song live in 1982 in the programme ‘ Mortal Men Immortal Melodies’. Video clip below:

Thanks for giving us the live link. The words become more clear in the live version.

man donon ke khil jaane do
ik dooje se mil jaane do
‘ rehte ‘ hain bechain bechaare

Regards.

This is REALLY A GEM of a song.

Atul ji,

The song is picturised on B Nandrekar and NOT on Jairaj.

I have a feeling that G.M Durani himself is singing on the stage in the film. In the movie it is not Jairaj but Durani himself. The song is in Bhairavi but it is hard to follow the sargam by the little boy.

The singer on the stage is neither Durrani nor Jairaj, but as Sadanand ji has said, I confirm that he is Babasaheb Nandrekar aka B.Nandrekar.
