‘Aa Jaa Sanam’ (1975) was produced by S A Mehmood and was directed by Yusuf Naqvi. The cast included Feroz Khan and Tanuja in lead roles supported by Deven Verma, Shabnam, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Banerjee, Shivraj, Mukri, Meenaxi, S A Baker, Kalyani Bai etc.

I have recently watched the film for the first time and I am surprised that it is shot in ‘Black and White’ for a 1975 released film by which time almost all the Hindi films were made in colour. Obviously, the film must have got held up for a long time before it was released. I guess that the film may have been shot around mid-1960s going by the trends of costume used by Feroz Khan who is seen with narrow bottom pants. By the starts of 1970, the fashion of bell-bottom pants was seen in many films. Also, the film has all three male voice songs of Mohammed Rafi whereas after the post-Aradhana (1969) period, Kishore Kumar would have got at least one song for the film if not more because the film distributors normally used to insist.

‘Safed Jhoothh’ (1977) was produced by Ashim Kumar and was directed by Basu Chatterjee. The cast included Ashok Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Mithu Mukherjee, Deven Verma, Manik Dutt, Aroop Kumar, Vidya Sinha, Geeta Kak etc. Pradeep Kumar and Amol Palekar made their guest appearances in the film. The film is a remake of Bengali film, ‘Chhutir Phandey’ (1975) with Soumitra Chatterjee, Aparna Sen and Utpal Dutt as main actors.

This film is one of the lesser known among the films directed by Basu Chatterjee who have directed many ‘middle of the road’ films. The Ajmer born and Mathura bred Basu Chatterjee (10/01/1927 – 04/06/2020) migrated to Mumbai in 1948 and worked as a cartoonist in ‘Current’ and ‘Blitz’ for about 18 years before venturing into Hindi films as Assistant Director under Basu Bhattacharya for ‘Teesri Kasam’ (1966) and under Govind Saraiya for ‘Saraswatichandra (1968). ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969) was his first independently directed film which got him his first Filmfare Award for the Best Screenplay. The films which brought him accolades were ‘Rajanigandha’ (1974) followed by ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975), ‘Chitchor’ (1976). Thereafter, he directed many films, most of which belonged to ‘middle of the road cinema’. In all, he directed 42 films and 8 TV serials during his career of four decades.

Today, November 6th is the 40th Remembrance Day of Sanjeev Kaumar, (09/07/1938 – 06/11/1985), one of the most versatile actors of Hindi films and the two-time National Award winner. He was popularly known as Haribhai among his close friends which was derived from his real name, Harihar Jariwala. He was the first one from his family to step into the films on the basis of his talents, eventually becoming an icon of Hindi cinema. I have watched his performances in films for the first time in ‘Shikaar’ (1968) in the role of a calm and calculated police inspector followed by ‘Jyoti’ (1969) in a lead role. I was impressed with his performances in these two films which appeared different from his other contemporary actors.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were some Hindi films which were labelled as ‘parallel cinema’, ‘new wave cinema’ or ‘art cinema’ when they were released. The films included ‘Bhuvan Shome’ (1969) by Mrinal Sen, ‘Uski Roti’ (1969) by Mani Kaul, ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969) by Basu Chatterjee, ‘Maya Darpan’ (1972) by Kumar Sahni, ‘Garam Hawa’ (1974) by M S Sathyu and ‘Ankur’ (1974) by Shyam Benegal. Among these films, there was a film titled ’27 Down’ (1973) about which I had a faint memory. Few days back, the name of this film came back to my mind when I read an article with a curiosity-creating caption, ‘A class IV employee, his only film won two National Awards, died at 35……. Who was Awtar Kaul?’ in The Economic Times, September 22, 2025. He was none other than the director of ’27 Down’ (1973).

Subsequently, I read two more articles about Awtar Kaul – one in ‘Chinar Shade’ by Avtar Mota and another in ‘The Wire’ by his nephew, Vinod Kaul. Surprisingly all these articles appeared during 2024-25.

Incidentally, ’27 Down’ (1974) was screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in 2024 to commemorate 50 years of the film’s release. Perhaps these articles appeared around that time as tributes to Awtar Kaul on 50th year of his passing away on July 20, 1974.

We know that S D Burman sang about 150 Bengali NFSs in the beginning of his career. Most of them became very popular. In Hindi, the number is about 25. We have 5 of them on the blog.

Today on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, here is a lesser known SDB song. I couldn’t get much detail. Looks like it must have been recorded in the year 1948, in the days following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. However some sources on internet mention the year as 1960 for this. Also this seems to be album containing more songs and titled as ‘Gun Dhaam Hamaare Gandhi jee’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and its details please.
