Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 27
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Haan ji, yes. Reuse of songs in Hindi films goes back a long way. I had no inkling of this particular episode that goes back all the way to 1944. A very dear friend, Anoop ji Gadodia, pointed it out to me recently.
We have earlier presented songs of 30s, which have been used in later films. Examples are “Ik Bangla Bane Nyaara” – a song from the 1937 film ‘President’, which was later used in the film ‘Do Raaste’ of 1969. Then we have another song for the same year – “Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye” from the film ‘Street Singer’, which has been reused in the 1973 film ‘Aavishkaar’. The thing to note is that both these reuse events occurred decades after the original song was released.

While collecting information for writing articles on Hindi songs in Bangla films, I have often come across discussions and references about the beauty and the elegance of Suchitra Sen, Supriya Devi, Sandhya Roy and Sabitri Chatterjee in the golden period of Bangla film industry. In fact, during this period, all the four actresses ‘cornered’ a majority of Bangla films. In a way, they had partly contributed to the revival of Bangla film industry after a slump arising out of the partition of Bengal in 1947.

Shammi Kapoor had acted in over a dozen films as a lead actor in early 50s, most of which flopped at the box office. Chor Bazaar (1954) was one film. It was produced under the banner of All India Pictures and it was directed by P N Arora. The star cast included Shammi Kapoor, Sumitra Devi, Chitra, Om Prakash, Kammo, Amir, Cuckoo. Parshuram etc with a guest appearance by Wasti. This film had six songs all written by Shakeel Badayuni and set to music by Sardar Malik. I remembered the name of this film only because of an immortal song “huyi ye hamse naadaani teri mehefil mein aa baithhe” from this film which I had heard on my younger days on radio. Recently, I had seen this film on the VCD that I have with me. As usual with almost all VCDs of old films, the film lacks continuity in some places because of lots of cuts. I did not find one song ” Har dar ki thokerein hain” sung by Lata Mangeshkar in the VCD.
