🙂 🙂
Welcome all to our next century milestone, piling nine hundred on top of eleven thousand. And we are now just 100 short of the next thousandth milestone. And we hope to get there shortly now. This milestone has been quite slow to arrive. We have taken full forty days from the previous century, which occurred on 24th Jan.

In the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s, Shashi Kapoor was the busiest actor in the industry. After his struggle years of early 1960s, and riding on the success of films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965), he started getting offers in such huge numbers, and because he did not turn down any one, there was a time when he was booked for almost 5 to 7 years at a single stretch.

Today (25 october 2014) is the birth anniversary of Sharda Rajan Iyengar, who is known to music lovers as just Sharda. Shankar (of Shankar Jaikishan duo) had brought her to limelight with the “Suraj”(1966) song Titli udi ud jo chali. This song tied with another “Suraj”(1966) song Bahaaron phool barsaao for the best singer Filmfare award. There used to be just one Filmfare award for best singer those days (common for both genders) and this song getting tied for the top singer category made Filmfare create the categories of best Male and best Female playback singers from the next year onwards. I was a very young kid those days and I was one of those who were simply mesmerised by this “titli udi” song those days.

Prem naam hai mera. . .
Prem Chopra. . .
Thus happens the surprise introduction of this villain cum character artist, in the film ‘Bobby’ (1973). I call it a surprise because his name does not appear in the credits at the start of the film. ‘Bobby’ was one of the films that I got to see on the big screen, with family. Prem Chopra would be a familiar artist in the nascent mind of the school going ‘yours truly’, thanks to films like ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Upkar’. And so, when abruptly and unexpectedly on to the shining tinsel screen, appears this familiar face and the familiar voice, chewing on a blade of grass, and making his presence felt in a very lewd and unexpected manner, I remember I was aghast – “arre, is ka to naam bhi nahin hai, ye kaise aa gaya?”. For a split second, the thought did cross my mind – “cinema waalon ne koi galat reel laga di hai”. But immediately as the film continued, that thought would be discarded. “Achhaa, aisa bhi hota hai. B’gair naam ke bhi actor film mein aa jaate hain”.

Here is the ‘U’ song in the series of A-Z of Rafi songs. I knew this song vaguely, but when looking for ‘U” song in the list, I could not recognize it. I decided to try it because it is a Rafi solo composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. I heard the whole song and picturization, I liked the energy and mischief in the composition. The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri.

I am a big fan of Ravi. He is perhaps the only music director who was around when the golden era of Hindi movie music began to the time this era was finally gone for ever. His career began as a chorus singer in late 1940s,then he became assistant to Hemant Kumar (he was his assistant in “Naagin” (1954)) and then he became an independent music director with “Vachan” (1955). From then on till 1980s, he composed songs, many of which became so popular that they ended up becoming iconic songs. I in fact describe Ravi as a composer of iconic songs.
