“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is an archtypical Dilip Kumar movie. At least that is how it appeared to me when I became aware of this movie in my younger days. This movie was being shown in an open space in my colony for free. Young kids like me and my friends , after suffering through the movie for almost half the lenth of the movie, could take it no more and decided to call it quits. “What is all this pyar vyaar, rona dhona, why cannot the hero indulge in some maar dhaad instead”, our leader wondered aloud, and the rest of the kids whole heartedly agreed.

There were three top heroes in Hindi movies in 1950s. Of them, viz. Raj Kapoor expired in 1980s and Dev Anand just a few days back. One of them, viz Dilip Kumar is still around. He in fact is celebrating his 89th birthday today. He was born on 11 th december 1922 in Peshawar,now in Pakistan. He made his debut in Hindi movies with “Jwaar Bhata” (1944) and his made his mark as a hero with “Jugnu” (1947) and soon he became a hot property in Hindi movies and earned him the sobriquet of “Tragedy king”. It is not an accurate description, becuase he has worked in several light hearted movies as well.

“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is one of the first “old” movies that I became aware of as a pre teen kid, and my impression about old movies being melancholic stuff was mainly based on this movie, its songs and also its title.

“Meri Bhabhi” (1969) is a movie produced by A G Films. It was directed by Khalid Akhtar. the movie had Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehmaan, Kamini Kaushal, Abhi Bhattacharya, Mehmood, Aruna Irani, Lalita Pawaar,Kanhaiyya laal, Raj Mehra, Tiwari, Mukri, Sundar,Lalita kumar, Baby Sabihaa etc in it.

“Baat Ek Raat Ki” (1962) is a movie starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. When one looks at the songs of this movie, one notices that this movie had lots of singers singing lots of solos and duets. This movie had singers like Rafi,Lata, Manna Dey,Hemant Kumar,Asha Bhonsle and Suman Kalyanpuri. And this movie has duets sung by Rafi and Lata, Rafi and Asha Bhonsle, as well as Hemant Kumar and Suman Kalyanpur. In fact, Asha Bhonsle and Rafi sing as many as four duets in this movie.
