Phir teri kahaani yaad aayi

Posted on: December 15, 2011

“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is an archtypical Dilip Kumar movie. At least that is how it appeared to me when I became aware of this movie in my younger days. This movie was being shown in an open space in my colony for free. Young kids like me and my friends , after suffering through the movie for almost half the lenth of the movie, could take it no more and decided to call it quits. “What is all this pyar vyaar, rona dhona, why cannot the hero indulge in some maar dhaad instead”, our leader wondered aloud, and the rest of the kids whole heartedly agreed.

The songs of this movie are nice no doubt, but they were obviously not meant for a young kid that I was during 1960s and 1970s. 2011 is a different matter altogether. These days I can tolerate and even enjoy the songs of this movie, though I continue to be intolerant of the plot of the movie.

I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie. Here is another song from this movie. This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Waheeda Rehman and Dilip Kumar. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra. Translation has been provided by Sudhir jee.

Song-Phir teri kahaani yaad aayi (Dil Diya Dard Liya)(1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

phir teri kahaani yaad aayee
phir tera fasaanaa yaad aayaa
phir aaj hamaari aankhon ko
phir aaj hamaari aankhon ko
ek khwaab puraana yaad aayaa
phir teri kahaani yaad aayee

jalte hain chiraagon ki soorat
har shaam teri hum yaadon mein
jab subah ko shabnam rothi hai…..
kho jaate hain hum fariyaadon mein
kho jaate hain hum fariyaadon mein
jab dil ne koi aawaaz sunee
jab dil ne koi aawaaz sunee
tera hi taraanaa yaad aayaa
phir teri kahaani yaad aayee

shaayad kabhi milnaa ho jaaye
baithe hain issee armaan mein hum
toone to kinaara paa hi liya
uljhe hain magar toofan mein hum
ae jaan-e- waffa phir aaj hamein
ae jaan-e-waffa phir aaj hamein
pichhla woh zamaana yaad aayaa
phir teri kahaani yaad aayee
phir tera fasaanaa yaad aayaa

phir teri kahaani yaad aayee, phir tera fasaanaa yaad aayaa
phir aaj hamaari aankhon ko, ek khwaab puraana yaad aayaa

Yet again, the memories of your love revisit me
Yet again, the tales of your past come to mind
Yet again today, these eyes are re-living an old dream

jalte hain chiraagon ki soorat, har shaam teri hum yaadon mein
jab subah ko shabnam rothi hai, kho jaate hain hum fariyaadon mein
jab dil ne koi aawaaz sunee, tera hi taraanaa yaad aayaa

My being smolders like the lamps in the evening
Reminiscing the thoughts about you
And when the night weeps its tears of dew at dawn
My mind is overcome with beseeching (for you)
Any sound that my heart hears
My mind goes back to the songs you sang

shaayad kabhi milnaa ho jaaye, baithe hain issee armaan mein hum
tu ne to kinaara paa hi liya, uljhe hain magar toofan mein hum
ae jaan-e-waffa phir aaj hamein pichhla woh zamaana yaad aayaa

I am still waiting, with this hope and longing
That I may yet meet with you again, one day
It appears that you have found the steady shores
While I am still far away in the sea, battling the storms
O the life of my trust
Yet once again today, the memories of our past days (together)
ome to my mind
