Today’s song is from the film Kaise Kahoon-1945.

The film was made by Pancholi Art Pictures, Lahore, owned by Dalsukh Pancholi. In those days, there were only 3 filmmaking centres of Hindi Films. Bombay, Calcutta and Lahore. Bombay made Hindi and Marathi films, Calcutta made Bangla and Hindi films and Lahore made Punjabi and Hindi films. Though the youngest was Lahore, in a short time, it had made some popular and hit Hindi films.

Today’s song is from the film Nishani-1942.

As far as the Film Titles are concerned, our filmmakers are not very knowledgeable, I would say. Some titles give one meaning and the film is about something else. There are so many examples of this. If you go through the Film Title index, you will find strange titles. Anyway, more about this some other time.

Today’s song is from the film Albeli-1945.

There were two more films with the same title, in 1955 and 1974. Its male variety-Albela- was made 4 times, in 1951, 1871, 1990 1nd 2001. This film was made by Talwar productions, Calcutta. The Music Director was G.A. Chishti. A very interesting observation is that after Partition, 80 % of the Muslim MDs who migrated to Pakistan were ordinary composers in India, giving music only to B and C grade films here. However, in Pakistan all these MDs became A grade MDs, became famous and had many films on their hands. All of them prospered.

There was ,however, one exception and that was Ghulam Haider. He was an A grade MD in India, but failed miserably in Pakistan. Does this speak volumes of the quality of Pakistan film music in any way ? A point to note was that after the crop of migrated MDs retired, the Pak musical industry was in doldrums, because there was no second line to take over – unlike in India !

Today’s song is a duet from the film ‘Aaj Aur Kal’ (1947).

This is yet another movie from 1947, about which very little information is available, other than what is given in HFGK inadequately. Names of the cast are given by only 3 names and the lyricist name is missing. The film was made Chitra productions Ltd., Lahore. It was directed by KA Abbas and the MD was Khursheed Anwar. Today’s song is from the film Intezar ke baad-1947.

1947 was the year of our Independence and this was also the year in which the highest number of Hindi films were made-187 ! This record remained unbroken till 1985 when 187 Hindi films were made. That means from 1931 to 1984 – a span of more than 50 years – thi record remained unbeaten. Even for the All India film count of all languages was the highest till 1947 – it was 280 films. This of course was broken sooner when in 1949, a total of 291 films of all languages were made in the country.

Today’s song is from the film Sahara-1943 – an almost 80 year old one !

Whenever I rummage through the pages of HFGK issues of the 30’s to 50’s for something,I see a lot of names of actors, actresses, directors, Lyricists, singers and composers. I find that names which are prolific in the beginning became rare and then disappeared. Like waves in the sea, artistes appear and disappear from time to time. Very few artistes have a longer career of more than 25 years. Similarly, some artistes have a very short career, say of just 3 or 4 films.

What is Beauty ?

Everybody’s definition of Beauty is different. It all depends upon individual likings. Some like good eyes, some like long hair, some like a round and attractive face….long nose…good smile… etc etc. Because of this, Shakespeare ended this debate by saying ” Beauty lies in the beholder’s eyes”. In other words, to each his own. However, there are many who go by the majority.
