The year was 1935 and New Theatres’ ‘Devdas’ (1935) was making waves across Indian sub-continent with K L Saigal’s mesmerising songs. One of Bomaby’s film production companies, Sagar Movietone felt that it should also have an actor-singer of the caliber of K L Saigal to counter the ‘Saigal effect’. A film distributor brought a young and tall handsome lawyer to Bombay and arranged his meeting with Mehboob Khan, the director associated with Sagar Movietone. Mehboob Khan found qualities in this man which he felt could be an answer to K L Saigal. The name of that handsome lawyer was Surendra Nath Sharma better known in Hindi film industry as Surendra or Surendranath.

This is a song from Sagar Movietone’s film ” Service Ltd”-39. It was a social cum crime cum mystery cum comedy film directed by Chimanlal Luhar, a well known director of those times. The music was by Anupam Ghatak, Lyricists were Zia Sarhadi and Pt.Indra and the cast included Surendra, Maya Banerjee, Bibbo, Yakub, Kayam Ali, Bhudo, Sankatha and other Sagars regulars.

“Anokha Pyaar” (1948) was an Ambika Films Production. The movie was directed by M I Dharamsi. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Nalini Jaywant, Mukri, Uma Devi etc in it.

The lines of this song “dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na” may remind most music lovers of the “Maine Pyaar Kiya” (1989) song that goes “dil deewaana bin sajna ke maane na”. The song “dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na” is not from that movie though. It is from a much older movie viz. “Aawaaz” (1956) and it is regarded as a timeless classic.

Hindi movie titles are often like comets that visits us at periodical intervals. For instance, the title “Dost” seems to get repeated once every decade. We have had movies with this title in 1944, 1954 and 1974. We did not have a movie of the title “Dost” in 1964, but we had “Dosti” in 1964 !

This blog had songs from “Naadaan”(1951) and “Nadaan” (1971). It turns out that a movie of the same title was also released as early as 1941. Very little information is available about this movie. This movie was directed by Zia Sarhadi. The movie had Aman, Noorjahaan, Masood etc in it.
