Chhodo kal ki baatein kal ki baat puraani

Posted on: January 26, 2009

There are many kinds of patriotic songs. Some are those in which one’s own nation is praised, some are those in which facts are not always presented correctly.

I like those kinds of patriotic songs which are to the point and which talk of nation building without too mach harping back on past glories etc.

That way, this song from “Ham Hindustani” (1960) is one patriotic song that tells things as they are and it exhorts people to get down to work and not rest on past glories.

I am not surprised that this song has been written by Prem Dhawan. He was a very good lyricist of patriotic songs ( of course he was a very good lyricist of other kind of songs as well).

To my mind, this song is perhaps the most appropriate song for today, which is 26th January, the Republic day of India.

On this occasion, I extend my hearty greetings to all Indians wherever they may be. Happy republic day to you all.

Song-chhodo kal ki baatein (Ham Hindustani) (1960) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Usha Khanna

Lyrics

aaa
chhodo kal ki baaten, kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mein likhenge, mil kar nayi kahaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
chhodo kal ki baaten, kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mein likhenge, mil kar nayi kahaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani

aaj puraani zanjeeron ko tod chuke hain
kyaa dekhen us manzil ko jo chhod chuke hain
chaand ke dar pe jaa pahunchaa hai aaj zamaanaa
naye jagat se ham bhi naataa jod chuke hain
nayaa khoon hai nayi umangen, ab hai nayi jawaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
chhodo kal ki baaten, kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mein likhenge, mil kar nayi kahaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani

ham ko kitne taajmahal hain aur banaane
kitne hain ajantaa ham ko aur sajaane
abhi palatnaa hai rukh kitne dariyaaon kaa
kitne parvat raahon se hain aaj hataane
nayaa khoon hai nayi umangen, ab hai nayi jawaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
chhodo kal ki baaten, kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mein likhenge, mil kar nayi kahaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani

aao mehnat ko apnaa imaan banaayen
apne haathon ko apnaa bhagwaan banaayen
Raam ki is dharti ko Gautam ki bhoomi ko
sapnon se bhi pyaaraa hindustaan banaayen
nayaa khoon hai nayi umangen, ab hai nayi jawaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
chhodo kal ki baaten, kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mein likhenge, mil kar nayi kahaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani

har zarraa hai moti aankh uthaakar dekho
maati mein sonaa hai haath badhaakar dekho
sone ki ye gangaa hai chaandi ki yamunaa
chaaho to patthar pe dhaan ugaakar dekho
nayaa khoon hai nayi umangen, ab hai nayi jawaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
chhodo kal ki baaten, kal ki baat puraani
naye daur mein likhenge, mil kar nayi kahaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani
ham hindustaani, ham hindustaani

What can I say ? I have heard all the songs you have posted today, Atul, and played them multiple times.
Each of them strikes a chord with me.

Wonderful selection of songs for Republic Day.
It is songs like these that should be aired regularly, not just on Republic/Independence Day.

Young Indians, school children should hear these songs and get inspired.

This particular song is very good. It does not complain about anything. It just says “forget the past, let’s build the future together”.

What a beautiful song this is. Very inspiring !!!

Atul, a very Happy Republic day to you as well.

What a great idea and what a great selection of songs for today, Atul! I know most of the songs well, and have enjoyed listening to them today. Such a refreshing change from the Indian channel we have where all we got today was a few patriotic songs in the morning, to be followed by loud, noisy movies which had nothing to do with Republic Day. Thanks again!

Hi Atul,
Pl. correct the Lyrics. All the Mukhdas are missing

India is in a bad state today – nobody may feel patriotic or proud of our country !! But this song brings back the feeling ! The nice feeling that we all need to feel – At least for a short while !

Yes, this is a very nice patriotic song. It does not boast about the greatness of the country, rather this song talks about looking forward to the future with cautious optimism. This is a patriotic song with its feet firmly on the ground, so to say.

this is best song it advised look ahead and live only present think on ,make life

I am just waiting for the release of this movie.

?? This is a fifty year old movie.

This song is a very inspiring song in my life which has showed me the indian way to live
