Jhumka gira re Bareli ke baazaar mein

Posted on: April 25, 2013

Shamshad Begam (14 april 1919 – 23 april 2013) left for her heavenly abode at the night of 23 april 2013. We in this blog discussed some rare Shamshad Begam songs as our tributes to her yesterday.

When I looked at the newspapers today and also checked the online versions of some other newspapers, I found that the main news (reported by news agencies and produced by most newspapers) was rather superficial and incorrect in facts. The report mentioned that she she got her first break with Peshawar Radio, Lahore, in December 1947. This incorrect information was faithfully reproduced in many newspapers and sites. Why and how can Shamshad Begam get break in a radio station in Pakistan in december 1947 (after partition) when she was already the leading female playback singer of Hindi movies by that time. But then the reporter has obviously taken this information from wikipedia which contains this wrong information. The real fact (also given in the same wiki page) is that she sang in Peshawar and Lahore stations of All India Radio in 1937.

The report also tells us that she was given her first break as a playback singer by Naushad and O P Nayyar. I am quite disappointed at the fact that these news reporters have given such misleading information on this topic where it was so easy for them to check up their facts. It is a well known fact that she sang her first songs under the music direction of Ghulam Haider in Khazanchi (1941)and then in Khandaan (1942) at Lahore. By that time she was already a well known name in NFS circles.

She arrived at Bombay alongwith Ghulam Haider’s music teamin mid 1940s. After partition, Ghulam Haider went back to Pakistan whereas Shamshad Begam stayed back at Bombay. It was then that she began to sing with Naushad, S D Burman, Sajjad Hussain, O P Nayyar etc.

Todays newspaper also had an interesting bit of information that the song “Kateya Karoon” which present generation knows as a song of “Rockstar” (2011) was sung by Shamshad Begam as far back as in 1963. This was for a Punjabi movie called “”Pind Di Kudi”. The song was picturised on Nishi. Hansraj Bahl was the music director.

Why just this song, Shamshad Begam has also sung the original versions of a few more well known songs . For instance, the Lata classic “Inhi logon ne le leena dupatta mera” (Paakeeza)(1972) was first sung by Shamshad Begam as far back as in 1941 ! This song from “Himmat” (1941) is already there in the blog here .

Then there is this iconic song Jhumka gira re Bareli ke baazar mein from “Mera Saaya” (1966). Few people are aware that a song with similar lyrics were sung by Shamshad Begam as far back as in 1947 !

Here is this song “Jhumka gira re Bareli ke baazaar mein” sung by Shamshad Begam. This song is from “Dekho Ji” (1947). Wali Sahab is the lyricist. Music is composed by Tufail Farooqui.

The song is wonderful to listen to. The song unfortunately failed to become popular but it deserves to be better known among music lovers. What a lively and peppy song with nice lyrics and music.

I like to believe while rehearsal inadvertently dadadadad got recorded. MDs invariably convey the tunes to the singers in dadadada lingo

Simply wonderful to hear the original song that inspired the hit from Mera Saaya. Exported me to another era of music before I was born.
