Atul Song-A-Day 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 8

Continuing the series of introductions, today, I have the honor of bringing Mahesh ji into the frontline of contributors.

The first time Mahesh Mamadapur appeared to connect with this blog, was in September of 2012. After that time, he has been very active in the comments section of the blog, and yes, has been in very constant communication with me over email. As per his own admission, he is very keen to start contributing articles. He has a deep interest in the music of 1940s and 1950s, and is aware of many gems that are still awaiting their place on this blog. But. . . – well I will let him finish that part of the explanation. Any case, he opens his account today – as Sushil Doshi would have said, “. . . aur is chauke ke saath (I mean, is post ke saath) Mahesh ji ne apna khata khol liya hai. Saari team ko is khilaadi se bahut ummeeden hain, aur mujhe yakeen hai ke Mahesh ji in ummeedon par khare utrenge. Doosre chhor se agli gend daalne ke liye tayyaar. . .”.

Mahesh ji has turned 40 in February this year. He lives in Belgaum with his family. His mother is a home maker. He has a younger brother, married, and with one child. Mahesh ji’s wife is a teacher and he has a school going daughter. In terms of profession, Mahesh ji is a Civil Engineer. He completed his 10+2 and B Tech in Belgaum itself. Then he went on to do his M Tech from NITK – Surathkal in 1998. He has a very active career, having worked with companies like L&T, Gammon, HCC etc. He is currently working with Artella.

He inherits his interest in film music from his father, who has a deep interest in and knowledge of the Hindi and Kannada film music. And he has also learnt a lot through reading about and listening to the film music of yesteryears. That is why, his comment is generally the first one, when there is some error or oversight in a post and its related information. In his own words – “Any technical mistake in the posts, I am ready to pounce as I feel this is one blog which should not contain mistakes.” This comment makes me both proud, and also cautious. 🙂

Thank you so much Mahesh ji, for taking this first step to start contributing. We look forward to more active participation from you in the coming weeks, months and years.

The song that I present with this introduction today has two connects. One is that as soon as I picked up this song to prepare it for posting, I was immediately reminded of Nahm ji, and the long series that she has posted recently on ‘Nazar Milaane’ waale songs. While that series was active, somehow I had missed this one. A very endearing song of complaint from a lady’s heart.

The second reason is that this song has been requested by another friend, Manju Das, some time back. Regular readers will recall that Manju Das had commented on some songs on this blog recently. Manju ji is the daughter of K Amarnath, the famous director of Hindi films, whose career has spanned more than four decades in the industry. He is the director behind such notable films as ‘Zevar’ (1942), ‘Gaon Ki Gori’ (1945), ‘Roop Nagar’ (1947), ‘Bazaar’ (1949), ‘Laila Majnu’ (1953), ‘Baara Dari’ (1955), ‘Naya Andaz’ (1956), ‘Kabli Khan’ (1963), ‘Ishara’ (1964) etc. After Manju ji commented on this blog, she and I have also communicated over email.

She has created a web page in the honor of her father, and has provided links for many songs from his films. As we discussed, it turns out that some songs are missing from her collection and they are not available on YouTube yet. So I offered to upload these songs for her. My response to this has been so delayed – Manju ji, I apologize, but it has been a few busy weeks with business travel also happening.

This is the first of the songs to be uploaded, in response to her request. The film is ‘Sarkaar’ from 1951. It is directed by K Amarnath. The lead pair in this film are Ajit and Usha Kiran. The nine songs of this film are written by Qamar Jalaalabaadi and Mulkhraj Bhakri. This song is from the pen of Qamar Sb. The music is composed by Pt. Gobind Ram. I request readers and friends to please add more information about this film and the picturization of this song.

The song is in the voice of Shamshad Begum. A very simply worded song, it tells of the complaints that a beloved is making to her lover. Her grievance is that the gentleman has made promises just in the glances from the eyes, but his heart is taken up by other interests. A very charming song to listen to. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Song-Kyun hamse milaayi najariya (Sarkaar)(1951) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Pt Govindram

Lyrics

kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
o kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
lagaa dil aur kahin
mera dil hai tere dil mein
o tera dil hai tere dil mein
tera dil aur kahin

wahaan jaana to baaten meethi meethi
baaten meethi meethi
yahaan aana to aankhen neechi neechi
aankhen neechi neechi
wahaan jaana to baaten meethi meethi
baaten meethi meethi
yahaan aana to aankhen neechi neechi
aankhen neechi neechi
mera ghar hai rain basera
o mera ghar hai rain basera
mehfil aur kahin
kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
o kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
lagaa dil aur kahin

pyaar ke raste jaate jaate
pyaar ke raste jaate jaate
humse banaaye jhoothe naate
humse banaaye jhoothe naate
pyaar ke raste jaate jaate
humse banaaye jhoothe naate
humse banaaye jhoothe naate
mera dil hai ek saraaye
o mera dil hai ek saraaye
manzil aur kahin
kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
o kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
lagaa dil aur kahin

pyaar bhara dil tod chale ho
pyaar bhara dil tod chale ho
ghaayal kar ke chhod chale ho
chhod chale ho
pyaar bhara dil tod chale ho
ghaayal kar ke chhod chale ho
chhod chale ho
ab jaao naa chori chori
oy ab jaao naa chori chori
qaatil aur kahin
kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
o kyun hum se milaayi najariyaa
lagaa dil aur kahin

Lovely intro to Maheshji, Atul.

And boy, what a song! It’s a case of “love at first hear” for me. Never heard it before, and I’ve totally fallen in love with it now. 🙂 Shamshad’s voice has always been special for me, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Another gem that has been brought out by this blog to the general public.
