Today’s song is from a so called “Stunt” film Garma Garam-1957.
Produced by N.C.Shah, the film was directed by P.L.Santoshi – who also wrote the film’s lyrics along with 2 more lyricists, namely D.N.Madhok and R.A.M. Khan. The cast of the film included Agha, Nadira,Gope,Omprakash, Bhagwan, Maruti, Anwar, Haroon, Krishna Kumari, Indira Bansal, Leela Gupte, Miss Kamal (wife of Maruti), Mumtaz (sister of singer Mubarak Begum) and many others including 2 artists with funny names- Chhota Gope and Bhootram ! For 11 songs, the film’s Music director Vinod had used 9 singers namely, Rafi, Asha, Shamshad Begum, Sharda, Batish, Durrani, Savita Banerjee, Oza and Kamal.
This film was an outright B grade film with second level actors and its Music Director was a talented composer without much luck. Therefore, in spite of having some very good songs, the film did not get any recognition. It went as it came, without anyone noticing. Too many comedy actors were stuffed in the cast- Agha, Gope, Omprakash, Bhagwan, Maruti, Haarun, Chhota Gope and Indira Bansal. The film industry is replete with examples of films becoming flops when so many comedians act in one film (exceptions like ” Bombay to Goa” etc are also there though).
In 1957, in the crowd of excellent musical films, a film , in order to be noticed, needed to be either exceedingly lucky or having superb music. Garma Garam had none, that is why it was dropped by the audience like a Garma Garam Potato ! The film was described as a Stunt film. I don’t know what stunts these comedians did in it. There were 11 songs in the film. I have heard about 6 songs from this movie and was reasonably pleased with its music. Unfortunately, a person with bad luck nullifies all other good points around him. Poor Vinod, though a very talented composer, could never be counted among the Top grade maestros. He always got only B or C grade films. Even then some of the extraordinary songs he created in such movies are a testimony to his Genius. The song “Lara lappa” from film ‘Ek Thi Ladki ‘-1949 alone was enough to engrave Vinod’s name in HFM history !
In Hindi films, many times the titles are given to the films just to attract the audience. Such films have absolutely no relevance to the core-story of the film. Sometimes there is an excess of certain emotions in the films. I had seen one Hindi film in which, by the end of the film all the major characters were shown as dead- including the lead pair. No wonder, the audience must have run away lest they would be the next in line !
Excess of any emotion, be it tragedy or comedy makes no sense. The public comes to the theater to get entertained. When you decide to go to a film, what are your criteria? Story, publicity, cast, director, the banner or simply the posters? There were times when banners i.e. studio names were indicative of the type of movies generally made by them. Like, for example – Minerva Movietone means long dialogues, costumes and historical stories. Wadia Movietone means stunts, fights and action, supported by Wonder Horse, Dog, Cat, Elephant, Monkey or some such animal like even a Viper, Bear or a Lion ! Prabhat means meaningful themes and thought provoking subjects, Prakash Pictures means religious or Mythological films etc etc.
Then came a time when people went to see movies to listen to songs of Naushad, Husnlal-Bhagatram or C Ramchandra etc. Later the stars were the attraction for the crowds like Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala or Meena Kumari etc. Whatever the genre of the film, an integral part of the cast was the comedian. Thus there were even times when films were made in the names of Johnny Walker, Om Prakash or Kishore Kumar. But when a film has a crowd of comedians and a music director who once gave music which shook the entire country, what would you expect from the film ?
This is precisely what happened with the film, ‘Garma Garam’. The cast consisted of Agha, Gope, Om Prakash, Bhagwan, Maruti Rao, Chhota Gope, Indira Bansal, Nadira, Rajni, Miss Kamal, Maya Das, Krishna Kumari and many others. The film was classified as a ‘stunt’ film. I wonder what stunts this band of comedians performed in the film. I saw this film when it was released on 5th July 1957 at Lamington Cinema, Bombay as well as in Ashok Talkies in Hyderabad. After seeing the film we felt like we had been cheated. The film had no stunts and nothing in the film to make the audience ‘garam‘ either ! In those times while Vinod’s songs of ‘Ek Thi Ladki’ (1949) were still echoing in our ears, music of this film made us completely ‘thanda thanda‘ and made us wonder if he was the same MD Vinod of ‘Ek Thi Ladki’? We could have said ” Ek tha Vinod ” !
Here is the film’s story which will prove what I have said.
The story….
Wealthy Garibdas had no issues, but only 2 Nephews- Banke, a simpleton and Banwari, a chaalbaaz, who spends money on dancing girl-Chandni. Knowing this, Garibdas makes his will in the name of Banke. While recording his will on camera, he dies without telling the location of his wealth halfway.
Banke contacts the photographer-Asha for enquiry. They fall in love. While searching they find that a map and 6 keys hidden in 6 Golden Chairs had the secret. But the chairs are already sold by Banwari to various people in India. They get addresses from the auctioneer who sold these chairs.
Asha and Banke contact all those buyers and get the 6 keys. Meanwhile, Banke comes to know all this and catches up with the pair. There is a fight in Banke and Banwari. Banke wins the fight, but magnanimously gives the keys to Banwari. Seeing this generosity, Banwari has a change of heart and both embrace each other.
Finally, they find a Box. Using the keys, they open the Box, only to find only a piece of white paper written ‘ God helps those who help themselves”. Asha has an idea. She starts pressing the box in different ways and suddenly it opens and the map is found where the wealth is hidden. The two brothers share the wealth.
Actually, 1957 was the best year in the Golden Era! The best year in the 50s! The best year for melody and music! Such wonderful films came this year!!! The lineup of 1957 films looks like the selection of the creamy layer in everlasting music – ‘Mother India’, ‘Pyasa’, ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Asha’, ‘Miss Mary’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’. ‘Nausherwaan e Adil ‘, ‘Gateway Of India’, ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke ‘, ‘Kathputali’, ‘Sharada’ . . . Films like Baarish, Ab Dilli door nahin, Abhiman, Bada Bhai, Begunah, Beti, Chhote Babu, Coffee House, Dushman, Johnny Walker, Miss Bombay, Miss India, Mr. X, Narsi Bhagat, Paak Daman, Pawanputra Hanuman, Ustad, Zamana. Films produced in Madras were quite popular. AVM’s ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Miss Mary’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’, Prasad Production’s first Hindi film ‘Sharda’, and MV Raman’s film ‘Asha’ played havoc with their captive audiences. Films from south somehow have always concocted a success formula, mixing comedy, tragedy, social message, excellent production values and above all superb music, which made their films very popular everywhere.
Satyen Bose’s ‘Bandi’ brought together all the three Ganguly brothers in one film for the first time. Later he would repeat this feat in ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ in 1958. ‘Musaafir’, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s first Hindi film as a director, was an experimental film depicting the phases of life – birth, life, death and rejuvenation, symbolically through a succession of tenants in a house on rent. Director Amiya Chakravarty’s competition with Gyan Mukherjee came to an end with his unexpected demise while the making of ‘Kathputali’ was in progress. The film was completed by Nitin Bose. (Later, Gyan Mukherjee also passed away while making ‘Sitaron Se Aagey’ (1958) which was later completed by Satyen Bose. Both films had the same story and same heroine).
With the musical blockbuster ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ from Filmistan, Nasir Hussain introduced his own success formula of entertaining films and minted crores by repeating it several times, in a new garb. This film changed Shammi Kapoor’s luck, and made him an A grade actor. However, it did not much benefit the heroine Ameeta. She remained where she was – a second grade actress. Filmistan also released ‘Paying Guest’, with chocolate hero Dev Anand, with superb music and songs composed by SD Burman. Dev also featured in ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, another musical entertainer from Navketan, his home production company.
A surprise hit that year was the socio-religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’. The song “Zara Samne To AaO Chhaliye” became the unexpected top song of the year and an iconic one at that! ‘Apradhi Kaun’ was genuinely an excellent detective story. Amiya Chakravarty’s ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ was a hit due to its superb music, though its cast was quite ordinary. ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ got the National Award.
To compete with such musical and entertaining films, a film needed to be equally good. Unfortunately this film failed pitifully with a poor story, irrelevant title, poor direction and below average Music.
The lead actress of this film was Nadira. She had become an overnight glittering star with her very first film ” Aan-52 “. However, this good luck slowly but surely diminished over the next few years and she ended up doing side and character roles.
Born as a Baghdadi Jew, on 5-12-1932, with a name of Farhat Khatoon Ezekiel, her mother was Iraqi and father was Egyptian. She was the only girl in the family. She had 2 brothers. First she wanted to become a Nun and then a Doctor, but financial difficulties forced her to learn Shorthand and typing. Being attractive, she had many boy friends. One day, along with her Boy friend, she went to a party for the film world. Kardar, Mehboob, S U Sunny etc were present there and naturally they were impressed with her good looks and sophistication. Mehboob Khan was the first to contact her and sign a contract with her for Rs. 1200 p.m.
For the first 3 months, there was no work, except watching the shooting daily and learning things. She did not get her pay,as she did not ask for it. When Mehboob learnt this, she was given Rs 3600 at one time. 65 years ago, this was some amount !
Her first film Aan-52 became a Hit. In her second film Naghma-53, she fell in love with the Producer/Director/Lyricist Nakshab Jarachavi. Unfortunately, she could not tolerate his narrow minded restrictions on her social life and the marriage broke within 2 years. Then she married a non filmi person , but this marriage too broke more quickly. Then she remained single forever. Nadira worked with Raj, Dilip, Dev, Ashok kumar,Raaj kumar, Talat mehmood and almost every known actor. She was the First actress to own a Rolls Royce car in Bombay. But later on she worked even in B and C grade films to survive. She won a Filmfare award for her role in the film ‘ JULIE ‘- 75.
She acted in 92 films. Her last released film was Josh-2000. Her last days were spent in illness and in the company of friends like Nirupa Roy, Nimmi and Shyama. She died on 9-2-2006. Her last rites were done by her long time friend Rungatha, as per Hindu customs, because that was her last wish. No one from film world came for the funeral.
Here is a ‘funny’ song from this film. Try to enjoy it….
