We are used to larger than life portrayal of characters in movies, which bear little resemblance to ordinary real lives that most of us lead. Sometimes,we get to watch some down to earth movies, that tell the tale of our own lives, rather than that of supermen and superwomen.
Rajnigandha (1974) was a heart warming movie, one of first low budget alternate cinema movies in 1970s, which tried to tell real life stories with actors who looked like real life characters. The Indian audience were not matured enough to take to such movies in a big way, but it is so nice to note that connoisseurs of quality cinema appreciated this movie. This movie won the filmfare award for best movie, and one of its songs won the national award for best song of the year. Ironically, that best song of the year was not in the list of most popular Binaca geetmala songs of the year. Does not matter.Any one who loves good music cannot but appreciate this wonderful song.
The title song of the movie (the topic of our discussion here) however, did make it to the Binaca Geetmala finals of 1975. Just listen to the voice of Lata, lyrics of Yogesh, and the music of Salil Chowdhary. And while you are watching the video, look at the expressions of Vidya Sinha. You could well be watching the expressions of a girl next door, that is how real life like was the movie and the picturisation, and that too, without making it boring for the audience.
And did I tell you that this was a heroine oriented movie in an era when heroines were presented like a decoration piece in most mainstream movies? A must see movie. For the time being, though, you can do with watching this video and listening to the audio.
The songs in this movie are not sung by the actors, rather the songs were used as part of the background music, (they express the feelings of the characters without the characters lip synching them) which was another new thing for Bollywood movies. Another off beat thing about this song was the use of textbook Hindi words, when the trend was to use textbook Urdu words. And the music included the Indian classical musical instrument-sitar prominently. All in all, it is a gem of a song, that has managed to remain hidden from the music lovers.
Song: Rajnigandha phool tumhaare (Rajnigandha) (1974) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-Salil Chowdhary
Lyrics–
haan yoon hee mehke preet piyaa ki mere anuraagee mann mein
rajneegandha phool tumhaare, mehke yoon hee jeewan mein
haan yoon hee mehke preet piyaa ki mere anuraagee man mein
adhikaar ye jab se saajan kaa har dhadakan par maana maine
adhikaar ye jab se saajan kaa har dhadakan par maana maine
mai jab se un ke saath bandhee, ye bhed tabhee jaana maine
kitana sukh hain bandhan mein
rajaneegandha phool tumhaare, mehke yoon hee jeewan mein
haan yoon hee mehke preet piyaa ki mere anuraagee man mein
har pal meri in aankhon mein bas rahte hain sapne un ke
har pal meri in aankhon mein bas rahte hain sapne un ke
man kehtaa hain main rangon ki, ik pyaar bhari badlee ban ke
barasoon un ke aangan mein
rajneegandha phool tumhaare, mehke yoon hee jeewan mein
haan yoon hee mehke preet piyaa kee mere anuraagee man mein
Translation-
Your Rajnigandha flowers have brought fragrance to my life,
Yes,my darling’s love has brought fragrance to my love starved heart
Ever since I let my darling have a right to rule over my heart beats,
ever since I committed myself to him,
only then I realised how pleasant it is to be tied up like this.
Every moment of my life is spent dreaming about him,
my heart wills me to become a colour filled love saturated cloud and then go and shower all this love over his premises

Hey Atul….noticed this “other” blog only now.
I am amazed at how prolific you are…and each article is so interesting that it is like Brian Lara’s batting. Prolific and majestic.
Very nice..this idea of a song-a-day. With the video, some background about the situation, full lyrics – in Hindi and translated into English.
Really, really nice. Keep it going.
And since it is a daily feature, I will be checking it out daily. 😉
The songs you have picked also are top-class.
