As timepass songs go, this must qualify as among the very best timepass songs of all time. The public at that time certainly enjoyed it, as shown by its Binaca geetmala ranking of number 4 in the Binaca geetmala final of 1970.
The topic of the song is an interesting one. Manoj Kumar is a country bumpkin and two girls decide to play matchmakers for him, and show him diferent girls. But Gangaram, our village bumpkin finds himself under severe culture shock on watching the modern girls of 1970, and expresses his disapproval in no uncertain way.
He finds fault if the girl has long hair, he finds fault if a girl has short hair. Slim girls are dancers in his eyes, and stronger built girls are wrestlers. And educated BA pass girl too does not escape from his censure.
Rightly flustered, the matchmaking girls give up saying that this fellow Gangaram is too uncouth to deserve a girl, and let him be left to his own devices.
I had thought that the lyrics of “Aaj pahli tarikh hai” was the longest in Bollywood history , but I find that the lyrics of this song easily beat other lyrics in length. As many as six girls are presented to Gangaram for his consideration in this song, each girl gets one para, and the song has eight paras in all.
This movie “Pehchan” had many lyricists ( Verma Malik, Indeevar, Neeraj) but this particular song was penned by the Verma Malik. And Hasrat Sahab was in full flow. He must have enjoyed writing this song and before he realised, the song had already become twice as long as the usual bollywood songs. This song runs into eight stanzas ( most bollywood songs are only three or four stanzas long).
And the lyrics are great fun to listen to. The singers enjoyed singing this song. Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur have done bulk of the singing, thankfully leaving the (out of her depth) singer Sharda to sing just a few words in the song. The music of Shankar Jaikishan adds to the fun of the song.
As I mentioned earlier, it is a great fun song, that retains its ability to amuse the listeners even today. Mukesh, Suman Kalyanpur and Sharda figuring in a great fun song- this could serve as a great trivia question in quiz competitions- and remember the correct anser just in case. “Wo pari kahan se laaoon teri dulhan jise banaaoon”- wow, what a song ! I heard this song may be a dozen time ( in the process of getting the lyrics right). And I quite enjoyed listening to this song every time.
Song- Wo pari kahan se laaun (Pehchaan) (1970 ) Singers-Mukesh, Suman Kalyanpur, Sharda, Lyrics-Verma Malik, MD- Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ye to meri hai saheli, dilwaali albeli
jaise motiya chameli, jaise pyaar ki paheli
solah saal ki umar, coca-cola si kamar
ratti bhar bhi qasar kahin aaye na nazar
kuchh huaa hai asar?
gol joode mein ye veni, aur venii mein ye tahni
kaise joodiyon se ped ugaaye
ye Ganngaram ki samajh mein na aaye
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
aankh jiski hai billi naam iskaa hai lily
aise kajre ki dhaar, jaise teekhi talwaar
ho dekh honthon kaa ye rang dekh chalne ka dhang
kate angrezi baal, baandhaa reshami rumaal
bolo kyaa hai khayaal?
ise jab liyaa taq meraa rang huaa faq
chhorii ho ke ye hajaamat karaaye
ye Gangaram ki samajh mein na aaye
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
naam iska kamal jaise ganne ki fasal
jaise khila hai ghulab dekh poora hai Punjab
dekh roop ki umang jaise hirni ka ang
jaise meethi ho khazoor
aisa mukhde pe noor
bol hai manzoor
ye to naache cham cham
mera nikle hai dam
isse bhangda kaun nachaaye
ye Gangaram ki samajh me na aaye
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ye to Sindh se hai aayi
padhi BA ki padhayi
tang kurta pyjama hai to chokri hungama
jaise titli ki ankh jaise udti patang
jaise koyal ki kook jaise khili khushboo
kahti I love you
hekad ghu hekad ghu
tu hi tu tu hi tu
aise nakhre kaun uthaye
ye Gangaram ki samajh me na aaye
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
na ye dil ki hai chothi
na ye pyar ki hai khoti
zara ho gayi hai moti
tabhi lagti hai choti
dekh iske muscle
ghee khaati hai asal
tere kheton me ye jaaye
tere hal bhi chalaye
tere bade kaam aaye
mujhe karo na hairaan
ye to lage pahalwaan
ise kasrat kaun karaye
Ye ganga ram ki samajh me na aaye
wo pari kahaan se laauun teri dulhan jise banaauun
ki gori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
ki chhori koi pasand na aaye tujhko
chodo ye to hai nadaan
kare sabko hairaan
nahin samjhega pyaar
bilkul hai ganwaar
ise rahne to kanwaara
phirne do maara maara
aao hum sang jaaye
mazaa isko chakhaayen
hosh iske udaayen
ye honth jab khole
baarbaar yahi bole
Gangaram ki samajh me na aaye
Ye Gangaram ki samajh..

Mukesh won the award for “Sabse bada nadaan hai” from this movie but not for this song.
Poet Neeraj appeared in the movie to sing, “Paise ki Pehchan”

All stories in India must have a happy ending , meaning the hero & heroine should get married.. So in order to give this song a happy ending I have added this following verse to this song ..
ye hai top model ladki
Paris hilton jaisi phadki
Dekh gore gore gal
Dekh blonde blonde bal
Ten thousand dollar kutta
Iski bagalme hi reheta
Ye jahan jahan jaye
Wahan dhoom mach jaye
mukesh
Na chahiye mujhe paris
Multi millionair ki waaris
Mai Babitase shadi karoonga
Ye Gangaramki samajhme ayi
Sharda

This song is really a total timepass.
It was very popular in its time – I remember it from a very young age.
If I am not mistaken Mukesh won the Filmfare Award for this song.
