Bol meri gudiya gudde ke sang jaayegi
Posted on: January 24, 2009
It was a much loved song when it first started playing on loudspeakers and radio. And as happened with many songs of those days, it was soon forgotten, though it was one song that was very cute and adorable to listen to.
And as happened to me most of the time, I had no clue what movie this song was from. Just now I came across a quiz in Memsaabstory site when the great Bollywood movie buff Memsaab (Greta) asked this trivia question- “In what film does Hema Malini sing a song holding a little doll, which then comes alive (as a miniature Hema) and sings along with her?”.
That really rang a bell, and my old memories of more than three deacades came back. A little search, and I realised what song this was. It was the song “bol meri gudiya gudde ke sang jaayegi”. I was not aware that this song was from “Bhai ho to aisa” (1972). I knew that the song was sung by Lata and Kishore Kumar. Now I know that Sahir has written this song. And it is a news to me that Sonik Omi are the music directors of this song. I have repeatedly stressed that Sonik Omi gave wonderful music whenever they got chances as music directors. In fact, I have yet to come across a single Sonik Omi movie in which their music was anything but outstanding. And now I find that “Bhai ho to aisa” was yet another feather in Sonik Omi’s caps.
This song is quite different and innovative from the usual Bollywood fare. Here two dolls ( Miniature Hema and miniature Jeetendra) are seen singing this duet. Thus this is a gudda gudiya song (Gudda= male doll, gudiya=female doll).
Playing games with gudda and gudiya is a favourite game with Indian girls in their pre teens. In those days, only desi dolls dressed in desi attires were available for the Indian kids. Now a days, Barbie dolls are availalble as well, that too dressed in Indian attire.Small girls used to play with gudda gudiya those days and their play included marrying a gudiya off to a gudda. I am sure the present day girls also play such games. I recall my kid very carefully combing the blonde hair of her (barbie) doll with a real comb for hours.
Coming to this song, the song must have served as a dream come true for the audience who had never listened to a song like this nor watched such a picturisation. But the song was not marketed well enough, and the song was soon forgotten. It was one song that I always loved to listen too, whenever it was played in radio. The loudspeakers had obviously stopped playing this song in later years because this song had failed to become an evergreen song.
Now thanks to internet, such a song can again be brought back into circulation, at least among those who like to listen to old Bollywood songs.
The lyrics are wonderful, and they really touch a sympathetic chord in the hearts of average Indians with middle class upbringing. The gudda and gudiya checking each other out and deciding if they are compatible with each other is lighthearted on the surface, but it is indeed a serious matter expressed in a light hearted manner in this song.
Sahir Ludhianvi, normally known as a shayar of serious songs has written a wonderful song that common audience could readily identify themselves with. The passages of the song where the gudda and the gudiya set their terms and conditions are so cute and real life. Gudda is practical in his approach , whereas the gudiya is romantic in her hopes and aspirations. The gudda would like the gudiya to tend to household chores like an ideal Bhartiya nari- viz she will have to grind the chakki, press his feet, fill water from the well, clean up the premises, cook, rear up the baby, etc. The gudiya on the other hand wants better terms and conditions and how cute are her demands and protests- move the chakki ? no way.He must instead take her to the fair and buy her jhumkas, instead of burdeing her with household chores, he should arrange for domestic help, governess etc, and he must be at her beck and call. Very cute demands, and reasonable too, I must add. 😉
Jeetendra and Hema Malini are seen singing this song in the voices of Kishore Kumar and Lata respectively and the two have sung this song beautifully. In the last para, the two dolls run away and the real life Jeetendra and Hema Malini start singing, arguing about the same terms and conditions, much to the amusement of the kids who were playing their gudda- gudiya game where they were perfoming the wedding to the gudda and gudiya.
In the last para, Jeetendra and Hema Malini start singing this song in the pipsqueak Donald Duck like voices in which dolls are supposed to sing and that adds to the cuteness of the song.
So, here is this wonderful song for the listening and watching pleasure of my readers. And I thank Greta (Memsaab) for her trivia quiz, which led to this song being posted here. What a cute song !

Lyrics
Bol meri gudiya gudde ke sang jaayegi
jaake piya pyaare ka angnaa basaayegi
gudde se kahdo main hoon matwaali
resham me lipti phoolon ki daali
ho gudde se kahdo main hoon matwaali
resham me lipti phoolon ki daali
nakhre uthaana hoga sar pe bithaana hoga
nakhre uthaana hoga sar pe bithaana hoga
arre bol mere gudde khayaal tera kya hai
tu bhi kuch kahde sawaal tera kya hai
kah do ye gudda hai ghairat waala
karta nahin hai koyi dhanda kaala
ho kah do ye gudda hai ghairat waala
karta nahin hai koyi dhanda kaala
chakki bhi chalaana hoga
pair bhi dabaana hoga
chakki bhi chalaana hoga
pair bhi dabaana hoga
bol meri gudiyaa iraada tera kya hai
jaan liya toone shahzaada tera kya hai
bol meri gudiya
bol meri gudiya iraada tera kya hai
jaan liya toone shahzaada tera kya hai
hmmph jooti bhi meri na peese chakki
karni padengi sab sharten pakki
he jooti bhi meri na peese chakki
karni padengi sab sharten pakki
mele me le jaana hoga jhumka dilaana hoga
mele me le jaana hoga jhumka dilaana hoga
bol mere gudde ye baat lagi kaisi
tujhe teri gudiya ki zaat lagi kaisi
bol mere gudde haan
bol mere gudde ye baat lagi kaisi
tujhe teri gudiya ki zaat lagi kaisi
hah chhodo ji hai ye kahan ki raani
bharna padega kuen se paani
ho chhodo ji hai ye kahan ki raani
bharna padega kuen se paani
jhaadoo bhi lagaana hoga
khaana bhi pakaana hoga
jhaadoo bhi lagaana hoga
khaana bhi pakaana hoga
munne ko khilaana hoga
aaya mangwaana hoga
nahin baanhon me jhulaana hoga
jhoola mangwaana hoga
haan pair bhi dabaana hoga
sar pe bithaana hoga
acha chakki bhi chalaana hoga
mele me le jaana hoga
munne ko khilaana hoga
aaya mangwaana hoga
baanhon me jhulaana hoga
jhoola mangwaana hoga
pair bhi dabaana hoga
sar pe bithaana hoga
chakki bhi chala hoga
mele me le jaana hoga
khana bhi pakaana hoga
jhumka dilaana hoga
jhaadoo bhi lagaana hoga
nakhre uthaana hoga
munne ko khilaana hoga
aaya mangwaana hoga
baanhon me jhulaana hoga
jhoola mangwaana hoga
pair bhi dabaana hoga

What a delightful song! I would never have remembered it but for your jogging my memory, but once I started listening, the words kept coming back to me! It is a pity this song didn’t become more popular because then it would have been transferred to CDs, which have been my source for old songs. Thanks for this gem.
