More sainyaa ji utrenge paar

This song from “Udan Khatola” should have been an “udan Khatola” song, but I find that it is just a “boat” song. The boatwoman ( who is she ?) is required to carry Dilip Kumar and Nimmi to the other bank of the river and she states that her song should enable the duo reach there safely.
Now I wonder why she should rely upon her singing rather than her boating skill to carry her customers through. It is like Indian cricketers not just relying upon luck to win matches, but depending upon it !
And true to her assertion, the boatwoman starts singing a song urging the river to flow slowly. It is like Indian batsmen urging the opposition fast bowlers to bowl slow so that the Indian batsmen may be able to score a few runs. I am sure Raja can come up with a nice parody of this song.
The water not only flows slowly as requested by the singer, the water in fact does not at all flow. How could it, when the so called water appears to be still water of a lake !
I am not suggesting that this song is better heard than seen. This song could be watched too for old time’s sake. It is always interesting to observe how Bollywood movies were shot haldf a century ago and how the actors looked like those days.
Dilip Kumar looked so young. As for the other actors in the picturisation, I hardly know anything about them.
As for the song itself, it is quite a nice song to listen to. The song by Lata is accompanied by chorus continuously singing “haiyya ho” “Haiyya re haiyya” and its various combinations throughout the song.

I love the poetical expression of love and care in this song.
The “naavik” or the boatwoman is in fact Nimmi in a male disguise, whereas the lady passenger along with Dilip Kumar is the “other” woman who is infatuated with Dilip Kumar (I think … she is a Raj Kumari in the story.) If my memory serves me correctly, Dilipkumar’s small plane(Udan Khatola) crashes on an island where Nimmi takes care of him. Nimmi and Dilipkumar keep their romance secret from Rajkumari due to her status.
So with this information, I am sure you will want to revise your write-up 🙂
