Aa gupchup gupchup pyaar karen

Posted on: February 16, 2009

This evergreen song from “Sazaa” has been sung by Hemant Kumar, Sandhya Mukherjee and chorus. I have little idea what the singers of the chorus sing, and so I have not written down the lyrics of the chorus. They either sing gibberish, or sing in a language that I am not familiar with. If any reader can tell what the lyrics are, I will add that.

The song is picturised on Dev Anand and Nimmi. S D Burman is the music director. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist.

This is one of my all time favourite songs. In the years 1960 & 70’s I was a fan of Hemanth Kumar & I am very much delighted for the voice of Sandhya Mukherji & the chorus in this particular song.

The starting lyrics of the song sung by chorus:

tongwali go tongwali
hathe mukhe chunkali
naake mukhe chunkali

The meaning of these lines are:
O Goddess Kali
whose face is smeared with lime and soot.

These lines are from a folk song of Tripura and have no relevance to the song under discussion. S D Burman added these lines just to have something for chorus to sing with the intention of erasing the same in the record version. Later it was realised that the these words remained in the record version..

Kamath Sir, Million thanks for sharing this rare information. I was trying to decipher these words since long. Such (gibberish) words add more flavour to the rhythm of a song.

While listening to a talk on Vividh Bharti, I learnt that the chorus was sung by the comedian actor Mahmood, who was paid Rs 50/- to help him during tough times. Those were the days when mutual relationships weighed more than career opportunities.

I had been trying to understand the wordings of the initial chorus of the song but had filed. But not now, thanks to Mr, Kamath and Prof. Saini. It is also very interesting to learn that it was sung by Mehmood who later became a great comedian.
