Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Gori tori baanki chitwan mein

Posted on: May 30, 2009

Manna Dey, with some exceptions, was not a mainsteam singer of choice. His voice was often used for bit actors and sometimes for lead actors too. Most of his songs were supposed to be there for light hearted fun. Yes, Manna Dey would be required to sing a semi classical song, which was supposed to be picturised in a light hearted way.

But it is interesting to note that several of these semi classical light hearted songs are now regarded as all time classic songs, viz “laaga chunri me daagh”, “chham chham baaje re paayaliyaa”, “phool gendwaa na maaro”, etc.

Here is a similar song. Here too Manna Dey was requited to sing a semi classical song which was supposed to be used as a funny song. To make it “funnier” still, the music used here is not semi classical , but western music !

The combination of semi classical song and western lighthearted music leads to a strange concoction, but I thing the resultant song is not all that bad to listen to. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist and Chitragupta is the music director of this song.

The movie was called “Aadhi raak ke baad” (1965) which apparently was a B grade suspense movie, going by the title of the movie.

Lyrics

arre haan haan haan
jiyo ho o

o gori tori baanki
haay haay raam

o gori tori baanki baanki chitwan mein ulajh ke
jiya mora sau bal khaaye
ho gori tori baanki

gori tori baanki

mad bhari ankhiyon me dore ghulaabi

mad bhari ankhiyon me dore ghulaabi
jisko tu dekhe kar de sharaabi
mad bhari ankhiyon me dore ghulaabi
jisko tu dekhe kar de sharaabi
gir ke uthe uth ke gire
sambhal naa paaye
o gori tori baanki
haay haay raam
gori tori baanki baanki chitwan me ulajhke
jiya mora sau bal khaaye
o gori tori baanki

gore gore mukhde pe kaala jo til hai
ho gore gore mukhde pe kaala kaal til
gore gore mukhde pe kaala jo til hai
atkaa usi me mera to dil hai
gore gore mukhde pe kaala jo til hai
atkaa usi me mera to dil hai
jhatka bahut atka bahut nikal naa paaye
o gori tori baanki
haay haay raam
gori tori baanki baanki chitwan me ulajh ke
jiya mora sau bal khaaye
o gori tori baanki

palkon me phans gayi aise nazariya
nazariya phans gayi
phans gayi
phans gayi
palkon me phans gayi aise nazariya
tadpe hai jaal me jaise machhariya
palkon me phans gayi aise nazariya
tadpe hai jaal me jaise machhariya
pal me idhar pal me udhar
haath na aaye
o gori tori baanki haay haay raam
gori tori baanki chitwan me ulajh ke
jiya mera sau bal khaaye
o gori tori baanki banki chitwan me
ulajh ke
jiya mera sau bal khaaye
gori tori baan
gori tori baan
gori tori baanki

I totally agree to what you have said – it’s a strange concoction, but the resultant song is not all that bad. In fact, given the situation, it’s quite a fun song in the movie.
As usual, I picked up this movie out of curiosity (really wanted to know what happens aadhi raat ke baad) 😉 but it turned out to be a pretty good movie (at least a lot better than the other movies I’ve been watching of late)! Just finished uploading songs in youtube, will be done with my review by tonight.

Thanks for posting. This is great. I remembered only a few words of the song listening on Vivdh Bharti about 30 years ago. I could not even find it on youtube. Thanks a ton 🙂
