Sun ri pawan pawan purvayya

on:There are many critics who believe that Bollywood movies are meant to be watched for relaxation rather than for taxing one’s brain by making one to think.
I agree with that view whenever I come across movies that have far too much melodrama in it.
I have no idea if “Anuraag” (1972) fits the bill. From the little that I know about this movie, Mausami Chatterji plays a blind woman, and the movie in fact revolves around that, I believe. Now that is not quite my cup of tea and I am unlikely to rush up to watch this movie.
The only concession I can make for this movie is that I can watch its songs. After all, this movie has some lovely songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by S D Burman. I have posted one Lata song from this movie already. Here is another nice song from this movie sung by Lata and picturised on Mausami Chatterji.
Personally I feel that listening to this song is enough. watching Mausami Chatterji living in a blind women’s Ashram ( are there such places like blind women’s ashram ?) is painful to me and I am sure to many other music fans, who cannot watch women suffering too much in Bollywood movies.

Song-Sun ri pawan pawan purvayya(Anuraag) (1972) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics
sun ri pawan
sun ri pawan, pawan purvayyaa
main hoon akeli albeli tuu saheli meri
ban jaa saathiyaa
sun ri pawan, pawan purvayyaa
main hoon akeli albeli tu saheli meri
ban jaa saathiyaa
tu ban jaa saathiyaa
chal tu meraa aanchal thaam ke
anjaane raste is gaanv ke
chal tu meraa aanchal thaam ke
anjaane raste is gaanv ke
saathi hain ye mere naam ke
nain ye nigode kis kaam ke
dole meraa man, aise jaise nayyaa,
main hoon akeli alabeli tu saheli meri
ban jaa saathiyaa
tu ban jaa saathiyaa
koyi to ho aisa poochhe baat jo
giroon to pakad leve haath jo
koyi to ho aisa poochhe baat jo
giroon to pakad leve haath jo
hanse roye sad mere saath jo
soye jaage sang din raat jo
aise ho milan jaise dhoop chhaiyaan
main hoon akeli albeli tu saheli meri
ban jaa saathiyaa
sun ri pawan, pawan purvayyaa
main hoon akeli albeli tu saheli meri
ban jaa saathiyaa
tu ban jaa saathiyaa

All is fine and dandy in the end ? Not really. Yes, she gets back her eyesight but there is a twist.
I don’t want to give out spoilers but this movie is a bit of a tear-jerker.
Famous songs. Including “wo kya hai, ek mandir hai” , “mera raja beta poochhe” (famous lori), “neend churaaye chain churaaye”. There is a nice Rajesh Khanna cameo in the movie.

I think she gets operated upon and everythings fine and dandy in the end.
Anyway, like a good Hindi film heroine, blindness does not stop her from making-up heavily, including the eyes. Come to think of it, hindi film heroines can sleep, give birth, have shower without even a trace of their make-up going awry.
All the songs of this film were excellent though.
