Great songs are not always the preserve of hit movies. I have realised that many great songs were composed for movies that flopped at the box office. The movies were forgotten , but the songs were not.

When one watches old Bollywood movies, one notices that people went about their lives in a laid back and relaxed manner. A typical girl would go to school/ college and while at home she would learn knitting/ cooking etc from her mother. She would also learn singing/ dancing from a tutor who would come to her home to teach her these arts. The girl would display her newly acquired prowess of singing / dancing in front of guests , parents and her guru.

When I watch many movie titles and story lines of old movies, I notice that many of them could not be made today because they would be regarded as politically incorrect in these days of being politically correct. I do not think we can have songs mentioning Bombay, Madras etc nor can we describe people as Junglee, blind, langdaa etc without invoking the wrath of some group of people or the other.

I had never heard about this movie called “Ek Thi Reeta” (1971). This obscure movie had Vinod Mehra and Tanuja in lead roles.

It was pointed out recently to me that I had not posted any songs from “Laal Patthar” (1971). I too am surprised because I was under the impression that I had posted at least one song fom this movie.

“Dosti” (1964) was a simple movie with a simple uncomplicated message, and the message went home. This small budget movie with no stars (which was the first movie of Rajshree productions) went on to become a hit movie.

I have posted as many as four songs from “Dosti” (1964). There were six songs in this movie as far as I remember. Who knows, there may have been more songs in it that I am not aware or which may have been excluded from the movie.
