Jawaan tum ho jawaan ham hain

Posted on: July 15, 2010

Here is a teasing song that is a beach song as well where boys (Dev Anand, Johny Walker) and girls (Vyjyanti Mala etc) are assembled at a beach. The first commandment of Bollywood movies is- “Though shall sing.” So a song ensues in which Dev Saab, all of 44 years, acts like a teenager teasing a 30 plus Vaijyanti Mala who is herself dressed like a teenager in a figure hugging tight dress. Johny Walker gives able company to the hero, as do other extras.

Coming to the song, Rafi sings this song with his customary gusto. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

It is a nice Rafi song to listen to, and somehow I feel that Shammi Kapoor instead of Dev Saab would have led to better picturisation with better on screen chemistry between the actors.

song-Jawaan tum ho jawaan ham hain (Duniya) (1968) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

jawaan tum ho, jawaan ham hain
ye pyaar tum se ho gayaa hai
jawaan tum ho, jawaan ham hain
ye pyaar tum se ho gayaa hai
milan kaa ik pal, ghazab khudaa kaa
jigar mein nashtar chubho gayaa hai
jawaan tum ho

ye garm reti ye paanv naazuk
aji na jaao, padenge chhaale
ye garm reti ye paanv naazuk
aji na jaao, padenge chhaale
meri ummeedon kaa tum ho sooraj
meri ummeedon kaa tum ho sooraj
tumhaare dam se hain ye ujaale
jawaan tum ho, jawaan ham hain
ye pyaar tum se ho gayaa hai
milan kaa ik pal, ghazab khudaa kaa
jigar mein nashtar chubho gayaa hai
jawaan tum ho

wo thandi lahron mein kab hai thandak
jo mere seene ki aag mein hai
wo thandi lahron mein kab hai thandak
jo mere seene ki aag mein hai
wo geet maujon mein kab milegaa
wo geet maujon mein kab milegaa
jo mere saanson ke raag mein hai
jawaan tum ho, jawaan ham hain
ye pyaar tum se ho gayaa hai
milan kaa ik pal, ghazab khudaa kaa
jigar mein nashtar chubho gayaa hai
jawaan tum ho

naa aage jaao, hai gehraa paani
phir uspe sholaa hai ye jawaani
naa aage jaao, hai gehraa paani
phir uspe sholaa hai ye jawaani
tumhaare tapte huye badan se
tumhaare tapte huye badan se
lagegi jal mein agan suhaani
jawaan tum ho, jawaan ham hain
ye pyaar tum se ho gayaa hai
milan kaa ik pal, ghazab khudaa kaa
jigar mein nashtar chubho gayaa hai
jawaan tum ho, jawaan ham hain
ye pyaar tum se ho gayaa hai
jawaan tum ho

Yes Atul this song was surely meant to be picturised on Shammi Kapoor sahab. Sometimes, lyricists and music directors, have the song ready beforehand, i.e. before the director can visualise the song situation or even before the movie is finalised, keeping some hero in mind. Sometimes this does work out in the final analysis, but sometimes it does not fit into the director’s scheme of things. Then the music director offers the song to whichever movie he thinks fit. This song also seems to fall in the same category of songs.

An example comes to mind straight away. “Khaike paan banaraswala” was written and composed for Dev sahab in “Banarasi Babu”[1972], but somehow did not fit in the scheme of things of that movie and later came to be picturised on Amitabh sahab in the movie Don.

I somehow don ‘t think Dev Anand could have performed Khaike paan in the same way as Amitabh Bachchan did, but that goes into the many ifs in life we have.

Also, Thou shall sing not though shall sing

In fact, the movie “Zanjeer”(1973) which launched Amitabh bachchan’s career was initially offered to Dev Anand by Prakash Mehra, but Dev Saab refused to act in that movie and the movie fell to Amitabh Bachchan. somehow I cannot visualise Dev Anand performing the same as Amitabh Bachchan in “Zanjeer” either. 🙂

hi atul
i fully agree with you. how ca Dev Saab act in a movie with no songs for the hero. it is said that this was the ground on which Dev Saab refused the movie.
now comin to this song please enlighten if this was a Navketan movie, then Dev Saab wud have had a say in the song. next thing is the lyricist- music director combo which was specializing in Shammi Kapoor in those days. what more to expect then!!!
