One of the biggest miracles of India has got to be its cultural diversity. A people with so many different languages, so many different customs, different religions still co-exist next to each other and are unified under one umbrella – the flag of India.

This is something that I don’t think any other country can quite boast of. It is truly a miracle – and I hope I am not jinxing it by talking about it.

It is this cultural diversity and richness that we need to protect as one of our most treasured possessions. And celebrate it by respecting each element of this diversity. No one is superior or inferior to another, they are all parts of what makes the whole.

This spirit is wonderfully exemplified by Shammi Kapoor (in his truly unique style) in this lovely song from “Tumse Achha Kaun Hai”.

The song is sung by Rafi saab and it talks about various states of India, various languages, different cultures (Bhangra, Karnatak music) – and finally culminates in a formation of the map of India by students.

It is wonderfully evocative of all that makes us proud of our national integration.

On this occasion of our 64rd Independence Day, this is a lovely song to mark the occasion.

Lyrics

Naa main Sindhi Naa main Marathi
Naa main hoon Gujarati

Naa to hai ek bhashaa meri
Naa meri ek jaati

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam himaala
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam himaala
Ab tum khud hi faislaa kar lo, main kis soobey waala

Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay
Ab tum khud hi faislaa kar lo, main kis soobey waala
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay

Jis dharti ka main betaa hoon uske mausam chaar
Jis dharti ka main betaa hoon uske mausam chaar
Garmi, sardi, patjhad aur albeli ritu bahaar
Jahaan saveraa
Jahaan saveraa gaata aaye raat bajaaye sitar
Raat bajaaye sitaar
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay
Ab tum khud hi faislaa kar lo, main kis soobey waala
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay

Main wo panchhi jis ki nis din laakhon kos udaan
Main wo panchhi jis ki nis din laakhon kos udaan
Uttar Dakshin Poorab Paschim goonje meri taan
Ek shaal hai mera jiskaa naam hai Hindustan
Naam hai Hindustan
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay
Ab tum khud hi faislaa kar lo, main kis soobey waala
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay

Bangla praant mein jaaoon toh main karoon kalaa se preet
Aaaaaaa
Bangla praant mein jaaoon toh main karoon kalaa se preet
Jab aaoon Punjab to Bhangrey ka ban jaaoon meet
Dakshin jaakar
Dakshin jaakar seekha maine karnatak sangeet
Karnatak sangeet
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Hhimaalay
Ab tum khud hi faislaa kar lo, main kis soobey waala
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay

Main Madraasi, main Gujarati, main ek Rajasthani
Main Madraasi, main Gujarati, main ek Rajasthani
Bada puraana ek Marathi, naya naya Haryani
Main kuchh bhi hoon
Main kuchh bhi hoon, lekin sab se pehle Hindustaani
Pehle Hindustaani

Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay
Ab tum khud hi faislaa kar lo, main kis soobey waala
Gangaa meri maa ka naam, baap ka naam Himaalay

Tumse Achchaa Kaun Hai had two lyricists Hasrat Jaipuri & Rajinder Krishen.
To best my knowledge I think this song was penned not by Hasrat but Rajinder Krishen.

Hi Atul:
Back in the winter of 1968, when I was about eleven years old, all of us schoolkids, were gathered together dressed in PT whites, as props in the shoot of this song.
The venue was the the grounds of the St. Anthony’s Girls High School, Chembur.
It was the first time in my life that I got to witness a film shoot
and the images are indelible in my memory.
The movie was directed by Pramod Charkavorty.
Shammi must have been over 36 and Babita was just 21.
