Ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai

Posted on: August 31, 2010

Sad songs form an important genre of songs in Hindi movies. And it is noticed that many of such songs go on to become timeless classics.

I have posted many sad songs in this blog. Of late, I have become interested in knowing how these sad songs are picturised. There is no single standard way of picturising such songs. One way is through a piano song. Another way is by the actor to get drunk and sing a sad song.

Here is another way of singing a sad song. In this song from “Taraanaa” (1951), Dilip Kumar is not making use of a piano or a drink, though he can obviously afford them. Here he stands in an open place that appears to be a stage. Initially he leans against a pillar and starts singing. Then he goes towards the podium and continues his singing leaning against it. Then he moves on to a flower vase and sings by leaning against it. And then he moves on to another flower vase. And while the song is nearing completion, he turns back.

I like this new way of singing a sad song. Be sad by all means, but never stay rooted to a place. Keep walking, that keeps th blood circulation going and with time it may help make you feel better. Perhaps this walking helps as much as the singing itself. I feel that I need to do further research on this matter of sad songs picturisation.

Here is this song ” ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai”. It is sung superbly by Talat Mehmood and Dilip Kumar does the lip syncng cum walking on this song. Kaifi Irfani’s lyrics should be regarded as the real star of this song. Anil Biswas composed the music.

Song-Ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai (Taraanaa) (1951) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Kaifi Irfani, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

jali jo shaakh-e-chaman, saath baaghbaan bhi jalaa
jalaa ke mere nasheman ko aasmaan bhi jalaa

ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai
ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai
ab to tujh bin zindagi bhi mujh pe ik ilzaam hai
ek main hoon ek meri

dil mein kyaa guzri tere jaane se koi kyaa kahe
dil mein kyaa guzri tere jaane se koi kyaa kahe
saans jo aati hai wo bhi dard kaa paigaam hai
saans jo aati hai wo bhi dard kaa paigaam hai
ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai
ek main hoon ek meri

aansuon mujh par hanso mere muqaddar par hanso
aansuon mujh par hanso mere muqaddar par hanso
ab kahaan wo zindagi jis kaa muhabbat naam hai
ab kahaan wo zindagi jis kaa muhabbat naam hai
ek main hoon ek meri beqasi ki shaam hai
ek main hoon ek meri

Your introduction is very nice,
The beauty of the song is it’s picturisation.
No ‘cut’ . Only one shot.3.20mins.
Very well filmed.
