Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye Lucknow ki sarzameen

Posted on: September 4, 2010

Hindi movie songs are mostly about human feelings, viz love, sadness, happiness etc. As a kid, I was not much into such high sounding songs, especially sad/serious songs. I was more into fun songs.

Then there was one kind of song that I absolutely loved. It is those songs that mention some place by name. For instance, there are several songs describing Bombay, viz. Ai dil hai mushkil jeena yahan.. Ye hai Bambai meri jaan(CID), ye Bombay shahar ka badaa naam hai (Kya ye Bombay hai ?) ,Dekhne me bhola hai dil ka salona Bambai se aaya hai babu chinanna(Bambai ka babu),Main Bambai ka babu(Naya Daur) etc.

Of course, the city of Bombay (now Mumbai) did not need any additional publicity, but songs containing the names of smaller places brought those names on the radar of public perception. For example,a song like Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me(Mera Saaya) earned Bareli (a sleepy town in UP) huge popularity even among those who were not familiar with UP towns. Similarly Bikaaner in Rajasthan became well known thanks to the song Mera naam hai Chameli…Chali aayi main akeli Bikaaner se(Raja Aur Rank)(1968). Recently “Aati kyaa Khandala” earned Khandala, (a small hill station in Maharashtra) huge publicity. As a kid, I would have dearly loved to see the name of my town (Ranchi) immortalised in a Hindi movie song, but it sadly never happened.

Here is a song that talks of Lucknow, the capital of UP. This song is the movie opening song of “Chaudhvin ka Chaand” (1960). As the credits roll in, this song gets played in the background. This song praises Lucknow to the skies. Shakeel Badayuni, himself from Badaayoon, a small town in UP, is the lyricist. Rafi is the singer and Ravi composed this song.

Now I have found out that this song, which is the movie opening song of this movie is the movie ending song as well.

PS-One can notice that many lyricists of those days immortalised the names of their towns by using those names as part of their nom de plume. Apart from Shakeel Badayuni, we had Majrooh Sultanpuri (from Sultanpur, a small UP town), Sahir Ludhianvi (from Ludhiana in Punjab),Hasrat Jaipuri (from Jaipur in Rajasthan), Asad Bhopali (from Bhopal in MP),Qamar Jalalabadi (from Jalalabad, then in British India, but now in Pakistan),Noor Dewasi (from Dewas, a town in MP) etc.

Song-Ye Lucknow ki sarzameen (Chaudhvin Ka Chaand) (1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye rang-roop kaa chaman
ye husn-o-ishq kaa watan
yahi to wo muqaam hai
jahaan Awadh ki shaam hai
jawaan-jawaan haseen-haseen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen

shabaab-o-sher kaa ye ghar
ye ahl-e-ilm kaa nagar
hai manzilon ki god mein
yahaan har ek rah-guzar
ye shahar laaladaar hai
yahaan dilon mein pyaar hai
jidhar nazar uthaaiye
bahaar hi bahaar hai
kali-kali hai naazneen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen

yahaan ki sab rawaayaten
adab ki shaahkaar hain
ameer ahl-e-dil yahaan
ghareeb jaan-nisaar hain
har ek shaakh par yahaan
hain bulbulon ke chahchahen
gali-gali mein zindagi
kadam-kadam pe kahkahen
har ik nazaaraa hai dilnasheen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen
ye Lucknow ki sarzameen

Just love this song!
Must admit I have not heard it often but it is a beautiful song, probably overshadowed by the other fantastic songs of this wonderful movie. This is another of those movies with one lovely song after another. I just love this movie – Guru Dutt, Waheeda, Rehman, Johnny Walker, Minu Mumtaz, Lucknow, Muslim social. My dream movie! 🙂

Just noticed while watching the song that there are 4 female singers and just 1 male singer in this movie.
Lata, Asha, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and of course Rafi saab.

Btw, nice intro, Atul. Another place that became famous because of a mention in a famous song is Bikaner, thanks to “mera naam hai chameli”.

And then there was “Agrey ka lala, angrezi dulhan laaya re”.

Thats quite a list.. ten there is also Lata Mangeshkar from Mangesh (not a lyricist though.)

Oh and you’re right, Ranchi could have done with some good publicity–it was the place of the mental asylum.

Please add the moving lines that end the movie…

Nibhayi apni aan bhi
Badhayi dil ki shaan bhi
Hain aise meherbaan bhi
Kaho to dein de jaan bhi
Jo dosti ka ho yakeen
Ye Lucknow ki sarzameen…
