Ae pyaase dil bejubaan

Posted on: September 16, 2010

Plagiarism is quite rampant in Hindi movies. Lifting scenes and even entire storylines without proper acknowledgement is nothing new. But in most cases such Hindi movies get away scotfree.

But there was one case in which one Hindi movie could not get away. A movie called “Begunaah” (1957) was made which was based on on a Dany Kaye movie “Knock on Wood” without giving due credit. The makers of the English movie for some reason decided to take great exception. They went to Indian courts, and the court gave the verdict in favour of the English movie maker. The verdict was quite standout in fact. It ordered that all the prints of “Begunaah” be destroyed.

Just imagine ! If the same rule was applied for all Hindi movies made since, then many of the well known Hindi movies would have to be destroyed. Names of movies like “Chori Chori”, “Gumnaam”,”Anand”,”Aradhana”, “Abhimaan”,”Sholay” etc etc, then a considerable number of well known Hindi movies will have to be destroyed.

I think that the movie maker of “Begunaah” (1957) was too broke to contest the case to higher courts and instead timidly surrendered to the verdict on one court.Normally in such cases courts order that proper attribultion be given to the original, instead of passing such a draconian order. I am not clear what was the provocation for an order like this, and a tame capitulation like this on the past of the producer. I think that the producer was too small time to be able to bear the cost of the litigation and he decide to tamely surrender.

The makers of this movie was financially ruined. Another person who had fallen on hard days and who was affected by this fiasco was Mukesh. Those days he was concentrating on becoming an actor-singer and as a result he was getting very few offeres as a playback singer. “Begunaah” (1957) was one of those few movies.

The song was created by Shankar Jaikishan to help prop up Mukesh’s floundering career. This song was picturised on Jaikishan in the movie, in order to save the producer some money. Just how broke could a movie producer get ?

This movie, which had Kishore Kumar and Shakeela in it is not longer in existence. But thankfully its records were not ordered to be destroyed and so we have an idea of how the songs sounded like.

The song sung by Mukesh is among the most memorable songs that he has sung in his career. Here is this rare and memorable song from “Begunaah” (1957). Sung by Mukesh, this song is written by Shailendra and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

It is a gem and we are lucky that the audio songs of this movie still survive.

song-Ae pyaase dil bejubaan (Begunaah) (1957) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

ae pyaase dil bezubaan
tujhko le jaaun kahaan
ae pyaase dil bezubaan
tujhko le jaaun kahaan
aa aa aa
aag ko aag mein dhaal ke
kab tak jee bahlaayegaa
ae pyaase dil bezubaan

ghataa jhuki aur hawaa chali to
hamne kisi ko yaad kiyaa
chaahat ke veeraane ko
unke gam se aabaad kiyaa
ghataa jhuki aur hawaa chali to
hamne kisi ko yaad kiyaa
chaahat ke veeraane ko
unke gham se aabaad kiyaa
ae pyaase dil bezubaan
mausam ki ye mastiyaan
aa aa aa
aag ko aag mein dhaal ke
kab tak jee bahalayegaa
ai pyaase dil bezubaan

taare nahin angaare hain wo
ab chaand bhi jaise jaltaa hai
neend kahaan seene pe koi
bhaari qadmon se chaltaa hai
taare nahin angaare hain wo
ab chaand bhi jaise jaltaa hai
neend kahaan seene pe koi
bhaari qadmon se chaltaa hai
ae pyaase dil bezubaan
dard hai teri daastaan
aa aa aa
aag ko aag mein dhaal ke
kab tak jee bahalayegaa
ae pyaase dil bezubaan

kahaan wo din ab kahaan wo raaten
tum roothe qismat roothhi
gair se bhed chhupaane ko
ham hanste phire hansi jhoothhi
ae pyaase dil bezubaan
lut ke rahaa teraa jahaan
aa aa aa
aa aa aa

I have written abt the song…as Jaikishan had an instinct to act in films and as he composed and recorded the song, he decided that the song be picturised on him…i saw the film first day, next day there was no screening…Jai was lip-synchronising the song in dark suit on piano, and perhaps it was a hotel scene.

Lovely song!!! I believe this is the only movie in which the great Jaikishan had acted. It is indeed unfortunate that we will not get the opportunity to see him acting.

The present day cacophony masters should jump in the sea if they have any shame left in them and stop giving trash in the name of music.
