Here is a mourning song from “Batwaaraa” (1961). No one had died. It is the age old relations that have are getting severed though. The two brothers, who lived under the same roof, now want to partition the home as they cannot see eye to eye with each other. So a wall is being erected right in front of the courtyard to partition the house into two.
A very poignant situation indeed. Imagining a situation like this can disturb sensitive souls even today, fifty years after this movie was released. Partitions are always painful affairs, especially when both parties decide to stay put where they are.
Such a situation in Hindi movies calls for an appropriate song. And s we have this heart rending song on this occasion, sung with feeling by Rafi. The song plays in the background while the estranged fqmily members look on, some with sorrow, and a few with smug satisfaction. The picturisation shows one brother (Pradeep Kumar with his part of the family consisting of Nirupa Roy, the mother, elder sister, kids looking on mournfully, while the other brother (Rehman), with his wife (who she is) who is behind this Batwaara” looking rather pleased with themselves.
This poignant song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by S Madan.
