Sa sa sa sa re

A couple of days back I got to see the movie Naughty Boy (1962). It is a comedy starring Kishore Kumar and Kalpana (often remembered as the heroine singing “main chali main chali” with Shammi Kapoor in Professor, or the object of Dev Anand’s “arrey yaar meri tum bhi ho ghazab” in Teen Deviyan).
It is an absolute riot. I will even go so far as to say it is one of the best Hindi comedies I have seen, especially considering it is not particularly well-known at all. The story is not particularly great but the scenes are really cute, the chemistry between Kishore and Kalpana is awesome (they were together also in the lovely Pyar Kiye Ja – remember the song “din jawani ke chaar yaar”?) and everything about it is so feel-good that you’ve got just love it. I would highly recommend it to anybody.
But the main reason I am writing here about it is the songs. Wow!!! What songs!!! SD Burman’s compositions – and each one is just so much fun. I think RD had a role to play as well.
I was quite surprised to find that not even one song has been posted so far on this blog. So I have taken the liberty of opening this movie’s account here with this song which I really really liked (I liked all the songs actually). I hope Atul posts the other songs also, all of them so deserve to be here.
This movie prompted me to see Kishore’s Baap re Baap (1955) which is also a fun movie, with lovely songs. Kishore was just such a talented person. He was not just a superb singer but also a good composer and really excellent at his comedy roles. I don’t think he got enough credit for his acting – nor was he particularly interested in acting, from what I’ve read. He always wanted to be a singer and acting just happened to him. Well, whatever the story, I am glad we got to be able to see him on screen and hear his voice in playback. A genius, he was, no doubt!
Here is “sa sa sa sa re” from Naughty Boy (1962). Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Song-Sa sa sa sa re (Naughty Boy) (1962) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics
aaa aaa aaa
sa sa sa sa re
ga ga ga ga re
taar dilon ke ab jod do
pa pa pa pa ma
maarega mama
kehti hoon mera peechha chhod do
sa sa sa sa re
ga ga ga ga re
taar dilon ke ab jod do
pa pa pa pa ma
maarega mama
kehti hoon mera peechha chhod do
sa sa sa sa re
pyaaar ki sargam
gaate hue hum
sapnon mein aao kho jaayenge
tum ko pataa hai
raag ye kya hai
lene ke dene pad jaayenge
pyaar ki sargam
gaate hue hum
sapnon mein aao kho jaayenge
tum ko pataa hai
raag ye kya hai
lene ke dene pad jaayenge
sa sa sa sa re
ga ga ga ga re
taar dilon ke ab jod do
pa pa pa pa ma
maarega mama
kehti hoon mera peechha chhod do
sa sa sa sa re
O sa sa sa ni da pa
ma pa ga
ma pa ni sa re ga

prem taraana
sab se suhaana
zindagi kya hai sangeet hai
geeton ki devi
sapnon ki rani
mujhko bhi tujh se hi preet hai
prem taraana
sab se suhaana
zindagi kya hai sangeet hai
geeton ki devi
sapnon ki rani
mujhko bhi tujh se hi preet hai

kehti hoon mera peechha chhod do
sa sa sa sa re
sur ke sahaare
bichhde sitaare
milte hain aise bolo maan gaye
ek to chori

khoob ho tumhen hum jaan gaye
sur ke sahaare

Raja ji
No wonder Kishore Kumar is revered as peer less; an individual with no formal training in music has left an unparalleled legacy. I sometimes wonder whether the history of Hindi film music would have been different, had Kishore da been as active in the 50s and 60s with playback singing, as he was in the 70s and 80s. In 50s and 60s, there is very little he sang for others, as he paid more attention to being a singer-actor himself.
As one searches through the “ocean”, there are so many Kishore songs that border on the inane, and yet divine. And the on screen performance, well only Kishore da himself can do it, no one else can. One is reminded of many other songs, some of them already on this blog, and some awaiting to join. Those who have not yet clicked the following, I would strongly recommend them to –
“Yeh bhi hakka hakka bakka” – Jaalsaaz
“Gaana an aaya bajaana na aaya” – Miss Mary
And more that I would request to be added
“Tikdambaazi” from Adhikaar (1954)
“Cheel cheel chilla ke kajri sunaaye” from Half Ticket
“Surma mera niraala” from Kabhi Andheraa Kabhi Ujaala
and many more I so sure. 🙂

Thanks for posting this, Atul. This has become my new favourite song now. I keep singing it all the time.
I realise that in my write-up I did not mention Asha Bhosle. I think she is absolutely outstanding in this song, matching Kishore word for word.
