Kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein

Posted on: February 28, 2011

My readers must have noticed that these days I am concentrating a lot on discussing songs of certain particular artists. And then all of a sudden, I start discussing the songs of some other artist.

There is a method in my madness. I have decided that this blog needs to have the magic figure of 100 songs for all the major artists of the golden era of Hindi movie music. Many of them already have over 100 songs of their own in this blog. In case of others who are still short by a few songs, I am consciously discussing several songs of their songs regularly to enable them to reach their centuries earlier than what would otherwise be the case.

My readers must be noticing that I am discussing Suraiyya songs a lot these days. Indeed I am. And it was because Suraiyya was short of her 100 songs in this blog and I was making sure that she reached this mark. Now, with this song, she reaches that magical figure.

Considering that she was one of the original superstars of Hindi movies, and that was decades before the present day legends had become legends, she richly deserved to have a century of her songs in this blog. And I am happy and proud that she now has 100 songs of her own in this blog.

The song that marks her century is not the typical Suraiyya song. To many music lovers, Suraiyya’s name may make one think that the song must be either a romantic song, or a sad song. But this song is neither. This song is a comedy song ! And quite an unusual song at that.

She has sung lots of broken heart songs. Here is a light hearted song that could be called a broken car song . Yes, here she sings about the feelings that a car owner has when his/her car breaks down on the road. Indeed, that is not a good feeling/experience for a car owner. A car owner, who may be exuding a picture of smug self assurance suddenly has that confident smile wiped off his/her face when one is stuck up on the road with a car that refuses to start.

This superb comedy song is sung by Suraiyya is rare gusto. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist and Hansraj Bahl is the music director.

Only the audio of this song seems to be available. I would love to watch the picturisation of this song.

Here is this song from “Moti Mahal” (1952) which is the 100th song of Suraiyya in this blog. I am sure my readers will enjoy listening to this Suraiyya song which is a song with a difference.

Song-Kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein (Moti Mahal) (1952) singer-Suraiyya,Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Hansraj Bahl

Lyrics

kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein
khade raho bas bebas hokar raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein

kapde hon maile
munh kaalaa-kaalaa
ho wo Suraiyaa yaa Madhubaalaa
aa ho
ho wo Suraiyaa yaa Madhubaalaa
bade-bade bhi ban jaayaa karte hain joker raste mein
bade-bade bhi ban jaayaa karte hain joker raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein

baar-baar handle ko ghumaayaa
dhakke de ke
sar chakraayaa
dhakke de ke sar chakraayaa
nikal gayaa hai apna to haay re kachoomar raste mein
nikal gayaa hai apna to haay re kachoomar raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein

tel pilaayaa
daalaa paani
par zaalim ne
ek na maani
par zaalim ne ek na maani
yaad aati hai hamko naani
ab ro-ro kar raste mein
yaad aati hai hamko naani
ab ro-ro kar raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein

sach kahti hai
duniyaa saari
chalti kaa hi
naam hai gaadi
chalti kaa hi naam hai gaadi
motor bhi chhakdaa hai
jab ho jaaye puncture raste mein
motor bhi chhakdaa hai
jab ho jaaye puncture raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein
khade raho bas bebas hokar raste mein
kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein

100 songs of surraiya ! wow. we must have seen some 20-25 surraiya songs in last month or so. Most of those songs were fresh as dew for me, especially the Husnlal Bhaghatram ones. My over all impression about surraiya is she appears very intelligent as well as talented. Died a silent death without exposing herself to the media.

A fitting tribute.

Atul ji,

What a gem, and what a wonderful reminder. I have the audio of this song, but have not heard it for ages. When I saw this post today, I just clicked it and heard it twice.

Yes, quite a departure from Suraiya’s style; yet she has rendered it with lot of zest and absolute conviction. One can actually feel that she is very tired, and is making so much effort to push a stalled car.

What a performance.

And yourself too, for continuously locating long lost and unheard melodies. 🙂

Thanks and rgds
