Jeewan se lambe hain bandhu

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor of articles to this blog.
The super Manna Dey song from Aashirwaad, 1968. Lyrics are by Gulzar and music is by Vasant Desai.
The lyrics of this song are just superb, very characteristic Gulzar poetry, use of very simple words, communicating a very profound ideas. The lines “saans ki dori chhoti pad gayee, lambi aas dagariyaa” is such a warm and touching thought, said so simply.
And the composition is so beautifully set to the rhythm and pace of a bullock cart. Even if one listens to this song with closed eyes, the image that comes to mind is of lonely rural roads in the night, with maybe a solitary lamp visible some distance away.
Regarding the on screen picturisation, it shows Ashok Kumar traveling in a bullock cart. I cannot place the driver of the bullock cart. I had read about this person in an article many many years ago, but now I am not able to locate his name.

Song-Jeewan se lambe hain bandhu (Aashirwaad) (1968) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-Vasant Desai
Lyrics
jeewan se lambe hain bandhu
jeewan se lambe hain bandhu
ye jeewan ke raste
ik pal thham ke ronaa hogaa
ik pal chalna hans ke
ye jeewan ke raste
ye jeewan ke raste
jeewan se lambe hain bandhu
raahon se raahi ka rishta
kitne janam puraana
ek ko chalte jaana aagey
ek ko peechhe aana
mod pe mat ruk jaana bandhu
do raahon mein fans ke
ye jeewan ke raste
ye jeewan ke raste
jeewan se lambe hain bandhu
din aur raat ke haathon naapi
naapi ek umariyaa
saans ki dori chhoti pad gayee
lambi aas dagariyaa
bhor ke manzil waale
uthh kar bhor se pehle chalte
ye jeewan ke raste
ye jeewan ke raste
jeewan se lambe hain bandhu

Great , what to say, I can and I listen this song not less than six to eight times until we sleep.
Lyrics great, the philosophical approach which rotates around the human life – the cart wheel. Bullock carts soud and music and voice everything beyond comparison, all great Masters.
