Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Wo pehli mulaaqaat

Posted on: May 20, 2011

Sajjad Hussain is regarded as one of the most talented music directors in Hindi movies. A respected music director like Anil Biswas described him as the only original music director in the industry, which is a very high praise indeed.

Sajjad Hussain would not suffer interference in his work and he tended to call a spade a shovel. As a result, he often ended up walking off his assignments in a huff, because of interference in his creative work by musically incompetent producers.

In the final count, the number of Sajjad Hussain songs in Hindi movies ended up at around 100 in some 16 movies. And what gems all these songs are. I have been looking for these songs and posting them in this blog. I may never be able to post all the 100 songs that Sajjad Hussain has composed because several of these songs are from his earlier movies and these songs are apparently lost for ever. So far I have been able to discover and post 46 Sajjad Hussain compositions. This makes this blog one of the best, if not the best, source for finding the compositions of Sajjad Hussain in one place. Everytime I locate a “new” Sajjad Hussain composition, that is a time to rejoice for me.

Here is another occasion to rejoice, because I have located yet another Sajjad Hussain composition. This song is from the movie 1857 (1946). This song is sung by Surendra and it is picturised on Surendra singing this song in praise of a young and coy Suraiyya. Shewan Rizvi is the lyricist.

Here is this great and rare discovery. I am proud to present this wonderful Sajjad Hussain composition for the enjoyment of my readers.

PS-“1857” (1946) had eight songs in it. All these eight songs have now been covered in the blog. The links of other songs from the movie are given below:

Chupke hi chupke na jaane
Dilli tere qile par honge nishaan hamaare
Gham e aashiyaanaa sataayegaa kab tak
Jhamak jhamak ye teg tamak
Meri ho gayi unse baat
Teri nazar mein main rahoon
Ummeedon kaa taaraa
Wo pehli mulaaqaat

Dear Sudhir ji/ Atul ji,
If you refer to the comments on the song ” Dilli tere qile par ” from this movie(dared 2.2.2011),you will note that I had said that Surendra was the lead character in this movie. However,it was pointed out that not Surendra, but Suresh was the lead actor as per the Kosh, and Surendra did not act in this movie. When I read the biography of Surendra,it was clearly mentioned therein also that he acted in film 1857.
The video of the song ‘woh pehli mulaqat” clearly proves that Surendra did act in 1857.
I am happy that the confusion is cleared once for all.It also brings out that no single source is foolproof in case of very old movies. We have to depend on a) people who saw the movie b) documented proof like Biography etc or c) any posters, books, interviews etc.
The idea of writing this is strictly to update the missing information and nothing else,as we all aim at the same thing-enjoying old music, courtesy Atul !

Atul ji,
What you have written about Sajjad Hussain is right.
He was known as much for his musical brilliance as his forthrightness. His compositions were the most complex scores and his intricate and difficult tunes were often a challenge to singers.
He was a perfectionist who looked into every detail himself. He never relied on assistants, not even to instruct the orchestra.
All this shows in “Ye hawa ye raat ye chandni”(Sangdil),which demanded 17 retakes for recording !
In the same film,he had a clash with Dilip Kumar(who had a habit of interfering in almost every department of film making, especially Music) and consequently,he never worked with DK after that.
He was very proud. He called Talat Mehmood as ‘Galat Mehmood’ and Kishore Kumar as ‘Shor kumar’.He had problems with Lata also for some time.
Due to this behaviour,he gave music to only 14 films in 20 years-from Gaali(1944) to Rustom Sohrab(1963).
According to Anil Biswas,Sajjad was the only original Musician in Hindi Film World !
