Jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raajaa jaa re

“Waaman Avtaar” (1955) is one of those B grade mythological/religious movies that the mainstream movie goers did not patronise. The movie may not have been a big hit, but I guess that a movie made on such shoe string budget can always earn a small and tidy profit for its makers.

And the music of this movie must have played a major part in bringing in the crowds in the small places where such movies tended to get released.

Here is a lovely “feeling of heart” genre of song from “Waaman Avtaar” (1955) . It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Nirupa Roy, who was a big star in such movies those days, before her mantle was passed on to Anita Guha.

This song is written by Pradeep. Music is composed by Avinash Vyas.

I have listened to this songs more number of times than I normally have to do in order to note down the lyrics, but I have failed to get several words right. I request our readers with keener ears to point out the missing/ correct words in the lyrics. This is a lovely song to listen to, and one can appreciate the song even more if we are able to get the entire lyrics right.

PS-The song is written mainly is Sanskritised Hindi, which is extremely effective in expressing the feelings of one’s heart at the hands of a wordsmith. This song uses words that are normally not used in Hindi songs. But what words, and how effectively they convey the feelings of the lady. I am not the oly one impressed with the lyrics of the song. Sudhir was suitably impressed too. In addition, he went through the lyrics of the song while enjoying this song, and got the lyrics of the song right. Here is how he appreciates the lyrics of this song-

And what beautiful lyrics, showing that the person with the right knowledge of the language can create such beautiful lyrics that will take your heart away. I have really fallen in love with this song, as I heard it repeatedly to catch the lyrics. And I am quiet taken in by the adjective ‘dhamkaakedaar’ used for singaar, says a lot for the emotions of the person who is singing this song. Wow..

Indeed, the words are awesome ! One can only be amazed at the grasp of Hindi language that Kavi Pradeep had.

And I am extremely thankful for the corrected lyrics which now enables one to enjoy the song even more.

Lyrics(Corrected by Sudhir)

jaa re jaa re
jaa re jaa re
jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raaja jaa re
saare jag mein baja de dhindhoraa

sajan kal aayega mora
sajan kal aayega mora jaa
jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raaja jaa re

ho o o o
ho o o
kal bada rang hoga
saajan mere sang hoga
pulkit ang hoga re
bhrikuti mein bhang hoga
dhanaktaa mridang hoga
aangan mein hudh’dang hoga re
ho o
kal bada rang hoga
saajan mere sang hoga
pulkit ang hoga re
naya milan ka dhang hoga
saara zamaana dang hoga
jhoom jhoom jhooloongi main hindora
sajan kal aayega mora jaa
jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raaja jaa re
saare jag mein bajaa de dhindhoraa
bajaa de re dhindhoraa
sajan kal aayega mora
sajan kal aayega mora jaa
jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raaja jaa re

aankhon mein khumaar hogaa
phir kal se
band mera dwaar hoga
phir kal se
haan
aankhon mein khumaar hogaa
phir kal se
band mera dwaar hoga
phir kal se
din mein sau sau baar
main karoongi pyaar
haan
din mein sau sau baar
main karoongi pyaar
nainaa kar ke chaar
piyaa pe doongi jaadoo daar
bada dhamaakedaar main karoongi re singaar
pehnoongi
haan haan pehnoongi
haan jee pehnoongi
kamar mein kandora
sajan kal aayegaa mora jaa
jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raaja jaa re
saare jag mein bajaa de dhindhoraa
bajaa de re dhindhoraa
sajan kal aayegaa mora
sajan kal aayegaa mora jaa
jaa re jaa re aakaash ke raaja jaa re
raaja jaa re
raaja jaa re

watching this video I noticed, Nirupa Roy passing her first two fingers in a shape of V, across over her eyes, reminds of the famous dancing scene from the film Pulp Fiction (1994).
In that John Travolta-Uma Thurman dance on Chuck Berry song “You Never Can Tell”-1964.
I’ve always thought that hand gestures was taken from the Indian dance.
thanks for lovely song.
