Koi le lo le lo le lo main meethha doodh laayi

Posted on: August 26, 2011

As long back as 1939, there was a fun movie called “Brandy Ki Bottle” . In this movie, a man (Master Vinayak) is asked by his boss to bring a bottle of Brandy to cure the illness of his boss’ kid. This man is not aware what is Brandy, and that leads to hilarious scenes throughout the movie.

People today may not be aware but Brandy is as the word had gone out of usage now. Brandy was basically a foreign liquor , much like bear, and it was used as a cure all for many minor ailments. If one was feeling cold, let him drink some brandy. If someone is ill, let him drink some brandy and he will feel better. Yes, that is the reputation brandy had acquired. so it is no wonder that Master Vinayak’s boss asks him to go and bring a bottle of brandy from the market.

This movie “Brandy Ki Bottle” (1939) has some nice songs in it. these songs were never relaesed on recors, so only their movie versions arae available. and fortunately, the prints of this movie are still available and some kind soul has uploaded the songs of this movie too.

The details about the songs are very sketchy. the only information available about the songs of this movie are that they were composed by Dada Chandekar. There is no information about the singers and lyricists.

When I was unable to get any information online, I turned to our own inhouse movie encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, and he has provided me with some invaluable information about this movie as well as the artists of the movie and the song.

Based with this information, here is a fantastic song from “Brandy Ki Bottle” (1939). In this song, several ladies are selling milk on streets, or may be they are advertising a particular brand of milk in this song. The song is sung by several ladies but the main voice is that of Meenakshi. And as was the practice those days, the song is picturised on her as well. Likewise a few other ladies too get to sing a few lines in their own voices, but the identity of those ladies are not known.

P K Atre is the lyricist of this song.

While trying to get the lyrics of this song right, I have succeeded to a lrge extent, but there are a few cases where I have not been able to get the words right. i request our readers with keener ears to help out with the right words, so that I may be able to add them to the lyrics.

Here is this fantastic song from the distant past of Hindi movies. What a wonderful song it is ! It is nice to able to go down memory lane and relive the past through this song.

Atul ji,
BRANDI KI BOTAL(1939),a Huns Picture Production was produced and Directed by Master Vinayak(Father of actress Nanda). The film was a remake of the successful Marathi film ‘ Brandichi Batali ‘ (1938) written and directed by famous Marathi writer/Dramatist P.K.Atre.
The cast incuded Master Vinayak,Meenakshi Shirodkar(Grandmother of Shilpa and Namrata Shirodkar),Visnupant Jog,Javdekar,Ashalata etc.
Brandi ki botal was a story about morality and self discipline. The naively innocent Bagaram(Master Vinayak),a Municipality clerk, has to find and secure a bottle of Brandy,to restore the health of his Boss’s ill son.Bagaram secretly loves Malati(Meenakshi),boss’s daughter. For this reason, not knowing anything he sets about to search for a Brandy Bottle. The film is full of hilarious incidents. Finally,Bagaram gets the Brandy bottle, but Malati calls him Bhaiyya !
The role of Bagaram was done by Damuanna Malwankar, the famous Marathi comedian in the Marathi version and it was a grand success.
The music was given by Dada Chandekar(Shankar Vishnu Chandekar),and most of the songs as well as story, screenplay and dialogues were written by P.K.Atre himself. One song was by Pt.Indra.The singers were Meenakshi and in one song Eric was a singer.

Thanks for these details, which are not available elsewhere. So Master Vinayak is the father of Nanda, and Meenakshi is Meenakshi Shirodkar. So their progenies too had success in Hindi movies.

Atul ji,

Some corrections to the lyrics.

The word ‘gorakh’ should be go-ras. ‘go-ras’ is one of the names of milk in Hindi used in North India. I am sure, this word has wider usage also.

The lines
gorakh jaisa ?? nahin
peewe sab sansaar
?? kaamini
gorakh ke ??

should read
go-ras jaisa ras nahin
peewe sab sansaar
kant rijhaawe kaamini
go-ras ke aadhaar

The word ‘kant’ is a synoym for husband.

Thanks for these corrections. Go ras for milk may have been old words, which are no longer in much vogue now a days.

I have a picture of Ashalata Biswas in my collection and I can say that the song is picturised on Ashalata Biswas. Probaby, she sings for herself along with chorus. Watch her close up at 1:05 to 1:15. Her trade mark dimple is visible.
