Baithhe hain rehguzar par dil ka diyaa jalaaye

Asha Bhonsle – the name that conjures up the racy and spicy sounds of ‘udlayee udlayee udlayee o’, a voice that has a chirp, and an impish and naughty flavor to it, and the versatility that adorns thousands of music creations that have become a hallmark in the annals of Hindi film music. The second of the famous siblings of the Mangeshkar clan, Asha ji was born on this day in 1933. She started singing for films at a very young age of 10 years. Although her released recordings in 1950s were second only to Lata, she was considered as the singer for “bad girls” and vamps, and got the assignments that were turned down by Lata, Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum. Her voice started getting noticed from films like Sangdil (1952), Parineeta (1953) and Boot Polish (1954). And then came the real recognition of her talent in the mid 1950s, under the baton of OP Nayyar, with hits like CID (1956) and Naya Daur (1957). She became the voice of Helen, and has sung most of the songs that Helen has performed on the screen. Helen ji used to attend the song recording sessions personally, to better get a feel of how the song is to be performed.
It is said that when she first heard the music of “Aa Jaa Aa Jaa” (Teesri Manzil, 1966), Asha ji was uncertain whether she would be able to handle this western music. The composer, RD Burman, offered to modify the tune to suit her style. Somehow she took up as a challenge, and the song was recorded on the original tunes, after rehearsals lasting 10 days. And the sounds of Teesri Manzil are a super success that run a tingle down even the young generations today.
Browsing through the blog posts by Atul ji during the day, I notice with interest, the songs that are getting posted today to honor her. And so I looked into my collection and came up with this gem of a melancholy sound from her. This is a rare song, in the sense that it is not heard very much on the radio these days, and as far as I could search, it is not yet uploaded on the YouTube even.
The film is Chaalis Din, a 1959 production from Zar Productions, Bombay, directed by Dwarka Khosla, The wonderful poetry is by Kaifi Azmi. The words are so beautiful that you will want to listen to it more than once. The soft and delightful composition is by Baabul. Verily a gem that I am sure many will remember.
Enjoy this wholesome melody – that is almost a satisfaction in sadness. Something that says a lot for the talent of this wonderful voice.
Many many happy returns of the day to Asha ji.
Song-Baithhe hain rehguzar par dil ka diyaa jalaaye (Chaalis Din) (1959) singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Babul
Lyrics
baithhe hain rehguzar par
dil kaa diyaa jalaaye
shaayad wo dard jaane
shaayad wo laut aayen
baithhe hain rehguzar par
dil kaa diyaa jalaaye
baithhe hain rehguzar par
akaash par sitaare
chal chal ke thham gaye hain
akaash par sitaare
chal chal ke thham gaye hain
ho o o o
shabnam ke sard aansoon
phoolon pe jam gaye hain
hum par nahin kisi par
ae kaash reham khaaye
shaayad wo dard jaane
shaayad wo laut aayen
baithhe hain rehguzar par
raahon mein kho gayeen hain
hasrat bhari nigaahen
raahon mein kho gayeen hain
hasrat bhari nigaahen
ho o o
kab se lachak rahin hain
armaan ki nar’m baahen
har mod par tamannaa
aahat usee ki paaye
shaayad wo dard jaane
shaayad wo laut aayen
baithhe hain rehguzar par
dil kaa diyaa jalaaye
baithhe hain rehguzar par

sudhir ji
Thank you for posting this song. This features in my collection also.
For unfathomable reasons Asha Bhonsle is my favourite among female singers as Mohd.Rafi is among males.
To each his own.
By the way, thanks to your efforts in analyzing many songs posted by you on this site I am beginning to UNDERSTAND the poetry and the MEANING of the words which are so meticulously explained by you.
