Angdaayi teri hai bahaanaa

Posted on: September 11, 2011

“Rattan” (1944) was a movie that was musically a major milestone for Hindi movie music. The music of this movie served as a major trendsetter. The music of this movie was based on folk music, as against classical music. This ensured that movie goers, who were exposed to such music in their day to day life, were able to identify with this kind of music better. And just how well did the public identify with the music ! The music of this movie became super duper hit. Naushad became a rage, and other music directors too jumped on the bandwagon of folk music based songs.

A few songs of “Rattan” have gone on to become timeless classics. Who can ever forget songs like Ankhiyaan mila ke jiya bharmaa ke chale nahin jaanaa sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali, O jaane waale baalamwaa laut ke aa laut ke aa sung by Amirbai Karnataki and Shyam, and Jab tumhi chale pardes sung by Karan Dewan.

Yes, this movie had several awesome songs sung by several singers. Here is another song from the movie which is sung by another singer.

Swarnlata, the newly married bride would like her saheli to leave her alone. Her saheli gets the hint and teases her by singing this song, telling her that she got the hint and she knows very well that Swarnlata’s “angdaayi” is just a “bahaana”. She should plainly ask her to leave and she will understand. She realises the fact that Swarnlata needs to be with her beloved.

The song is sung by Manju. D N Madhok has come up with very cute and natural lyrics for this song. Naushad is the music director, of course.

Here is this song from “Rattan” (1944). What a musical gems studded musical extravaganza this movie was !

PS-I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify the saheli lip syncing in Manju’s voice. And I hope that I have identified Swarnlata correctly.

Song-Angdaayi teri hai bahaanaa (Rattan) (1944) Singer-Manju, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

angdaai teri hai bahaanaa
saaf keh do hamen ke
jaa naa, jaa naa
angdaai teri hai bahaanaa
saaf keh do hamen ke
jaa naa,
jaa naa

teri uthti jawaani pukaare
teraa yauvan kisi ko lalkaare
teri uthti jawaani pukaare
teraa yauvan kisi ko lalkaare
dil ki dhak-dhak
dil ki dhak-dhak ye keh rahi hai
chori-chori balam yahaan aanaa
dil ki dhak-dhak ye keh rahi hai
chori-chori balam yahaan aanaa
angdaai teri hai bahaanaa
saaf keh do hamen ke
jaa naa,
jaa naa

man-man hamen na gaaliyaan do
lo chali main yahaan se aji o-o
man-man hamen na gaaliyaan do
lo chali main yahaan se aji o-o
koi kab-tak
koi kab-tak aison ke paas aaye
jinke dil mein auron kaa ho thikaanaa
koi kab-tak aison ke paas aaye
jinke dil mein auron kaa ho thikaanaa
angdaai teri hai bahaanaa
saaf keh do hamen ke
jaa naa,
jaa naa

jhoothi nindiyaa aankhon mein chhaa rahi hai
yaad piyaa pyaare ki aa rahi hai
jhoothi nindiyaa aankhon mein chhaa rahi hai
yaad piyaa pyaare ki aa rahi hai
wo jo nas-nas mein
wo jo nas-nas mein bas rahe hain
ye adaayen unhen bhi dikhlaanaa
wo jo nas-nas mein bas rahe hain
ye adaayen unhen bhi dikhlaanaa
angdaai teri hai bahaanaa
saaf keh do hamen ke
jaa naa,
jaa naa
angdaai teri hai bahaanaa
saaf keh do hamen ke
jaa naa,
jaa naa

You have identified Swarnlata correctly.

I have 78RPM record of the song ‘Jhute hai sapane suhane’ from RATTAN sung by “Manju”. In two other records of RATTAN songs I have, the name of singers have been printed without inverted comma. My wild guess is that, those days actor-singer’s name may have been printed in inverted comma on 78RPM records just to differentiate between playback singer and actor-singer. If my guess is right, the saheli in this song may be Manju.

Atul ji,
The actress in the role of the saheli is the singer MANJU DEWAN herself.
Many readers may not know who Manju was, hence I give some information on MANJU.
MANJU was born in 1928 at Nagpur as Manjula. Her father was a dramatist/singer and actor on Marathi stage. When he was called by Prabhat Films in Poona, the family shifted to Poona. There Manjula took music lessons fromPt.Keshavrao Bhole. She acted in AADMI(1938)and also sang a song”Main jaag gayi” filmed on her.She had also sung in MANOOS,its original version in Marathi.
She sang songs in Nayi Kahani,Chand and Ramshastri of Prabhat.CHAND was the debut film of Husn-Bhagatram as well as for Begum Para.
Manju’s younger brother Balakram was also an actor.
She lost many films dut to Prabhat’s contract. Her first outside film was GAALI(1944),music by Pt.Hanuman Prasad and Sajjad Hussain.
She acted and sang songs in RATAN(1944) as sister of Wasti, film’s second Hero.the songs of RATAN became famous.(In fact, when the entire film was made in Rs.80,000,the producer,Gemini Dewan-brother of Karan Dewan-got Rs.3,50,000 only towards royalty of the songs,in those days.)
During RATAN,Manju got married to Karan Dewan and settled in life. She was not allowed by her in laws to continue or sing in films.
Today, she stays with her son’s family at Bhulabhai Desai Road, south Mumbai ,leading a contented life.

Thanks a lot for this invaluable information, which, needless to say, is not available anywhere else.
So this Balakram is the same person who also sang songs ?

Oh! my wild guess about Manju came right.

I never knew that Manju married Karan Dewan. While doing a google search for Manju Dewan, I came across an interesting interview of Manju Dewan with her latest picture :
