Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Abhi to raat baaqi hai

Posted on: October 24, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

A soft and very sensuous piece of music from the 1969 film, Bandish. The film is produced under the banner of JJ Films, Bombay and directed by Charandas Shokh, the star cast of the film includes Shailendra, Sonia Sahni, Azra, Ulhaas, Sham Kumar, Mirza Musharraf, Kundan, Brahmchari, SK Prem, Sarita Devi, Uma Dhawan etc. The lyricist is yet another new name for this blog, Akmal Hyderabadi. The music is composed by Usha Khanna.

From the comments received for the previous song posted for this film, “Jaaiye Jaaiye Huzoor. . .” , our resident expert on movies from yesteryears, Arun ji Deshmukh, has the following to say for Shailendra, the newcomer who is the lead actor in this film.

Shailendra was a son of a big businessman of Bombay and was very keen to make a career in films as a hero. So the owner of JJ Industries, Jagjit Kalra produced this film under the banner of JJ Films. This was the only film where he played a lead role. I think, good sense must have prevailed over the father and the son and this was also his last film. Later he joined his father’s business.

About the film itself, the brief synopsis provided by Arun ji, reads as follows.

The story of this film is about CID Inspector Anand, who is a courageous, loyal and is devoted to elimination of traitors of the country. I thought this was CBI’s job, but the producers of this film firmly believed that CID does this work. Anand is sent abroad to many countries and returns victorious every time after eliminating traitors. But the supply of traitors is in plenty in India, hence he is appointed now in India.
He meets Shabnam in a train journey and becomes involved with her. The traitors kidnap Shabnam (why her ?) and Anand and they are brought to Lobo’s den. He wants secret information from Anand. That time Anand realizes that Shabnam is their accomplice. He escapes from there and finds out that Shabnam’s father is held by the traitors. After few reels, Anand, as expected, traces the culprits, arrests them and also captures Shabnam. Culprits are handed over to the police and Shabnam, he keeps for himself !

Every song from Usha Khanna being posted, is such a wonderful melody to listen to. This one is also such a beautiful number. The scenario is obvious; it is night time, and the leading pair finds themselves a remote isolated place, where they have to stay put and wait for dawn; just the two of them. There is the cliché bonfire set up by the hero, and then the song follows. The words are enchanting, almost arousing. And the music is soft but impatient, conveying a sense of amorous opportunities. And the rendering by Rafi Saab is sensuous and emphatic at the same time. Of course the visual and the expressions of Sonia Sahni and Shailendra do not match up to the quality and sensitivity of the words and the music. But still, the song is immensely enjoyable.

And for the hearts that needs plucking of romantic strings – their own or someone else’s, this is a beautiful song to hum to yourself, or to present to someone else. Enjoy.

abhi to raat baaqi hai, ye dhal jaaye to so jaanaa
ghadi bhar ko dil-e-nadaan, sambhal jaaye to so jaanaa

A measure of night still remains, let this be over
Before you give in to sleep tonight
For just a moment, let my turbulent heart become steady
Before you give in to sleep tonight

ye jalte honthh, aur ye neend mein doobi hui aankhen
mujhe soney nahin deteen, tumhaari adhkhuli aankhen
zaraa thhehro, mujhe bhi neend aa jaaye to so jaanaa

These smoldering lips and sleepy half closed eyes of yours
They have robbed the sleep from my eyes
Please wait till the sleep comes to my eyes
Before you give in to sleep tonight

meri aagosh mein aa kar, na lo madhosh angdaai
kahin behkaa na de mujhko, ye angdaayi ye tanhaai
ye angdaayi mohabbat mein badal jaaye to so jaana

This secluded ambience and just two of us together
Your sleepy exertions in my embrace
I fear these make my mind tremulous
Let this embrace, this exertion become an expression of love
Before you give in to sleep tonight

haseen ho tum tumhen kyaa gham, tumhen to neend pyaari hai
hamaaraa haal mat poochhoo, ke hum par raath bhaari hai
hamaare sar qayaamat hai, ye tal jaaye to so jaanaa

O angel of beauty, for you, just your beauty sleep is precious
The night hangs heavy for me, don’t ask me about the state of my emotions
An emotional calamity is nigh, let it pass
Before you give in to sleep tonight

This song was semi-popular during it’s time.
I am not aware of the hero of this film, little bio was helpful. thanks.
BUT…what a cleft chin the hero got!
Just like Kirk Douglas, John Travolta and Michael Jackson’s surgical chin 🙂
Have a happy diwaali to all 🙂

The real name of this film’s Hero (shailendra) is ‘Pradyumn’. He was the first son of wrestler ‘Dara Singh’. Born in 1928 ,Dara Singh, was married by his parents at the age of 9 in 1937. He later married again after divorce from her first wife. Born in 1945 ,Pradyumn, was from his first marriage.
Pradyumn worked in 5-7 movies before settling permanently in agriculture business in Meerut(UP).
Few of those films are Ramanand Sagar’s “Aankhen” in 1968 and “Ganga Tera Pani Amrit” in 1971.
