Ek do teen dil gayi chheen

Posted on: October 24, 2011

Today India follows the decimal system as far as currency is concerned where 100 paise = 1 rupee. But that was not always the case. The decimal systen was adopted by India in 1957. Before that one rupee was equal to 64 paise, and one anna equalled 4 paise. Thus half a rupee was 8 anna and so on. To differentiate between the paisa of the decimal system from the paisa of earlier days, the decimal system paisa was called “Naya Paisa” (new paisa). After 1964, the prefix naya was dropped, but in day to day life, usage of the term “naya paisa” continued well into 1970s. In fact, the coins itself had the word “naya paisa” or “naye paise” written on them.

A movie called “Naya Paisa” was produced in 1958. This movie was a Super pictures production and it was directed by Aspi Irani. This B grade movie had actors like Johny Walker, Chand Usmani, Tuntun, Krishna Kumari,Shammi etc in it.

The movie and its songs are today as obscure as a one paisa coin.

I just came across a song that must be regarded as the rarest of rare. The YT uploader had no clue about the details of this song so no details were given there. a little searching later, I realised that this obscure song was from “Naya Paisa” (1958).

This fun song is sung by Rafi and it is written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. The music, composed by S Mohinder, is western kind of music and it appears that the song is picturised as a dance song in a club. Looking at the cast, it is almost certain that this song is picturised on Johny Walker.

This song is a “number count” genre of song, which like “alphabet” songs, are big favourites of kids, including those who are kids at heart.

This movie has the word “memsaab” in it as well, and that makes it an ideal song to be used to greet Greta (Memsaab), especially on her birthday which falls today (on 24th october).

So here is wishing our beloved Greta (Memsaab) a very happy birthday.

Song-Ek do teen dil gayi chheen (Naya Paisaa)(1958) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-S Mohinder

Atul ji,
NAYA PAISA(1958) a super Pictures film was produced and directed by Aspi Irani, who also wrote the s/play.The noted Parsee Theatre personality Adi Marzban wrote the story.
There were 5 Lyricists,Raja MAKhan,MLKhanna,Varma Malik,Anjaan-Kapoor and Akhtar Romani.
Those were the days when Johnny Walker was very popular and was a must in every film, also getting songs to sing.In this film,Johnny Walker did a Triple Role, however the fun created was not 3 times.
I have seen this movie.
Ramesh(JW) and Bansi(Agha) always needed money.Ramesh was married,Bansi was Bachelor.Bansi’s rich wants wont give money unless he gets married,so he sends Malti’s(wife of Ramesh) photo as his wife.
Ramesh’s millionaire uncle dies leaving 50 lakhs for Ganesh, the look-alike twin brother of Ramesh, who has gone to Africa and is without a trace.Hence Bansi declares that Ramesh is dead and Ganesh has come here to claim 50 lakhs.(No. 1 )
The servant of Ramesh really thinks him to be dead and brings Johnny a look alike of Ramesh,as Ganesh to claim 50lakhs(No.2)
Meanwhile the real Ganesh also comes from Africa to claim 50 lakhs.(No.3).
Thus 3 Ganesh appear at a time before the Solicitor.
To complicate matters the aunty of Bansi also comes to live with Bansi’s wife(Malathi-wife of Ramesh-played by Chand Usmani.) etc…etc…etc…
One funny thing is that Ganesh No 2,i.e.Johnny demands all 50 lakhs in change of Naye Paise !

And what a lovely song it is! You are such a sweetheart Atul 🙂 This is a good song to use for Edwina to teach me how to swing dance, isn’t it?
