Phool sa chehra chaand si rangat

Posted on: January 4, 2012

4th january is the birthday of Pradeep Kumar, a leading actor of 1950s and 1960s, who later began to play character roles in 1970s. That way, he was the male equivalent and contemporary of Nirupa Roy with whom he shares his date of birth.

On the occasion of Pradeep Kumar’s birthday, here is a song from “Raat Aur Din” (1967). The song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Nargis. In Hindi movies, only the young and slim lead actors are supposed to sing romantic songs, but I always maintain that even middle aged actors have the rights to sing romantic songs. Both Pradeep Kumar and Nargis were well into their middle age and I think a middle age actor singing a romantic song to a middle aged lady has its own charm.

This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Phool sa chehra chaand si rangat (Raat Aur Din)(1967) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

phool sa chehra
aaaaaa
phool sa chehra
chaand si rangat
chaal qayaamat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra
chaand si rangat
chaal qayaamat kya kahiye
jo bhi dekhe
ho jaaye paagal
apni to haalat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra

apni ada se aap simatna
saaye se apne aap jhhijhakna
apni ada se aap simatna
saaye se apne aap jhhijhakna
aaa aaa aaa
haath lagey to kumhla jaao
aisi nazaakat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra
chaand si rangat
chaal qayaamat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra

ek nazar se dekhlo jisko
bemaut woh to maara hi jaaye
ek nazar se dekhlo jisko
bemaut woh to maara hi jaaye
ae ae ae ae ae
upar se bholi
andar se qaatil
haaye
upar se bholi
andar se qaatil
aisi sharaarat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra
chaand si rangat
chaal qayaamat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra

jis ko zamaana kehta hai sooraj
yeh to tumhaara naqshe kadam hai
jis ko zamaana kehta hai sooraj
yeh to tumhaara naqshe kadam hai
ae ae ae ae ae
mil jaaye jisko tumsi haseena
uski to kismat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra
chaand si rangat
chaal qayaamat kya kahiye
jo bhi dekhe ho jaaye paagal
apni to haalat kya kahiye
phool sa chehra

Atul ji,
RAAT AUR DIN-1967,an A.A.A. production film(where AAA meant
Akhtar Hussain,Anwar Hussain and Abu Baker-all brothers of Nargis),which was directed by Satyen Bose who also wrote its screenplay on the story of Akhtar Hussain and Dialogues by Govind Munis-anAstt.Director of Satyen Bose.
Raat aur Din was a remarkable movie based on a Psychiatric problem of Multiple Personality Disorder.Such type of subjects are hardly a basis for Hindi movies, though in Hollywood there were several films on such uncommon topics. This was a daring attempt in Hindi, but the team of Satyen Bose, and extraordinary acting by Nargis saw this film thru very successfully.Though the cash boxes did not rattle significantly,it was a critics’ choice all the way and was appreciated very much for its bold attempt.
The story is of Pratap(P.Kumar) and Varuna(Nargis) and their disturbed married life.Pratap, who is on his way to Shimla to see the would be wife, selected by his mother(Leela Mishra),meets Varuna on the way and gets married to her after some love scenes, songs and her father Khushiram(K.N.Singh)’s consent.
They come back and start their happy married life, but soon pratap finds that Varuna’s behaviour is strange and that she goes out in the night alone .however next day she does not remember anything. One day Pratap follows her in the Night Club where Varuna drinks and dances with a person Dilip(Feroze Khan). On confrontation she doesnot recognise Pratap, claiming that she is Peggy.
Pratap is furious and plans to kill her,but Dilip comes there and says that she is peggy.By that time Varuna does not remember her night outing and refuses to recognise Dilip.
Pratap takes her to many doctors (Dr.Kumar-Anup Kumar,dr.Alvares-Anwar Hussain etc).finally it is diagnosed as MPD-Multiple personality Disorder,to which only psychiatric treatment is given.Meanwhile,Pratap’s mother fixes his second marriage with Sheela(Veena Kumari). When varuna comes to know this she faints.
The doctors are called and thru psychiatric sittings in a row, slowly discover varuna’s childhood, her friend peggy, her mother’s behaviour etc.
This was a real treat for the critical viewer and very enjoyable.Very rarely, such type of films are made in Hindi and the producer-Jaffer Hussain(another relative of Nargis) must be complimented.
after this movie, hardly any offbeat movie based on Psycho problem was made in Hindi.

Arunji,
Yes, indeed this was a offbeat movie based on the psycho problem. I have seen “Deewangee”, 2002 release with Ajay Devgan, Akshay Khanna & Urmila Matondkar. Ajay Devgan acts as he is suffering from split personality to be released from the jail. This movie was one of a kind as in the end, someone (they don’t show the person) sings the song that Ajay used to sing. So, you had to guess if he was planning to take the revenge. But still we can’t compare it with Raat Aur Din because of different time period.

khyati ji,
Split personality and multiple personality disorder are very different from each others.
In split personality a person acts in 2 opposing natures-like Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde, one good and one bad person.the patient is aware of it but cant help.
In MPD,the patient acts like a totally different person-good or bad is irrelevent, and the patient is not aware of what happens in the other personality.Cases have been found in medical history where in MPD,the patient acted in 3 different personalities and that too for many days at a stretch.
I know these things because for 40 years I was in Pharma Industry, marketing Drugs.
