Aaj hamko hansaaye na koi

Posted on: February 7, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The film titled ‘Baadshah’ (1964) was produced under the banner of Navkala Niketan, with Dara Singh and Nishi in lead roles. The film is a costume action drama, set in an unspecified time period, with all the regular components of palaces, kings, court dances, royal intrigues, and since Dara Singh in the hero – it also has feats of strength and hand to hand combat.

The film is directed by Chandrakant Gaur. The cast of actors includes Dara Singh, Nishi, Kumari Rani, Tiwari, Rajan Haksar, Kehsav Rana, Radheyshyam, Kumud Tripathi, Uma Khosla, Mumtaz Begum, Rafique Sultana, Shiela Devi, Shamina, Kesari etc.

As a matter of routine, this B/C grade film has some A grade music and songs. The songs are written by Anand Bakshi, and the music direction is by N Dutta. One song from this film is already posted on this blog – “Ae Ji Mein Ne Kahaa, Suniye To Zaraa”). Here is a second song from this film. On screen this is picturzed as a court dance by Nishi, with Kamal Barot as the singing voice behind her for this song. The words and the emotions expressed by Nishi give an indication that she is dancing under some sort of duress. The audience for her performance is Tiwari, who is probably the king in this film, and Dara Singh, who apparently a new comer and a guest in this court. I request other readers to please add more information about this film.

On this blog, this is the first solo song by Kamal Barot singing under the music direction of N Dutta. As I checked the lists of songs composed by N Dutta posted on this blog, I find the names of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Sudha Malhotra and Suman Kalyanpur as lead female singers. There is one duet already posted, that has Kamal Barot’s voice accompanying Mahendra Kapoor.

N Dutta’s music has a charming and lilting quality, and many a memorable songs have come from his baton. As I have been working through his filmography, I am coming across so many songs heard on the radio decades ago, that are very hummable favorites, and now I find these are creations by him. In a manner of speaking, in 1964, N Dutta was at the peak of his career that lasted for a little more than 20 years. Starting in 1955 with the films ‘Milaap’ and ‘Marine Drive’, N Dutta has on average, composed music for two to three films per year for the next twenty years, till 1975. Post 1975, there are probably just two films in 1980, and then we do not hear any more from him. The year 1959 was his busiest, with six releases under his name as the music director.

On screen, Nishi presents a good performance. And I remember her dance sequences from other films also. A prominent name as a leading lady in B/C grade films, she was never really successful in breaking into the A grade circuit. Enjoy is even paced dance song, a hummable tune, subdued with a tinge of sadness.

aaj hum ko hasaaye na koi, aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai
aur bhi muskuraaye na koi, aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai

Pray don’t try to make me smile today
It’s a day my heart wants to weep
Wish no one else would smile
Today my heart wants to weep

dil hi toot gayaa, nagmaa rootth gayaa
bulbul qaid hui, gulshan chhoot gayaa
geet hotthon pe aye na koi
geet hotthon pe aye na koi

The heart, it is hurt
My song, it has turned away from me
The singing bird is captive
Separated from the garden (and flowers)
No songs come to its lips anymore

armaan raakh huye, spane khaak huye
ek ye roop milaa, dushman laakh huye
achhi surat bhi paaye na koi
achhi surat bhi paaye na koi

All my hopes and longings
All my dreams
Are but in ashes now
The attraction of my good looks
Made a thousand enemies
Pray this fate does not befall others
(that others may not be blessed with good looks)

Song-Aaj ham ko hansaaye na koi (Baadshah) Singer-Kamal Barot, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-N Datta

Lyrics

aaj hum ko
aaj hum ko hansaaye na koi
aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai
aur bhi muskuraaye na koi
aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai

dil hi toot gayaa
naghmaa roothh gayaa
bulbul qaid huyi
gulshan chhoot gayaa
dil hi toot gayaa
naghmaa roothh gayaa
bulbul qaid huyi
gulshan chhoot gayaa
geet hothhon pe aye na koi
geet hothhon pe aye na koi
aaj hum ko
aaj hum ko hansaaye na koi
aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai
aur bhi muskuraaye na koi
aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai

armaan raakh huye
sapney khaakh huye
ek ye roop milaa
dushman laakh huye
armaan raakh huye
sapney khaakh huye
ek ye roop milaa
dushman laakh huye
achhi soorat bhi paaye na koi
achhi soorat bhi paaye na koi
aaj hum ko
aaj hum ko hansaaye na koi
aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai
aur bhi muskuraaye na koi
aaj roney ko jee chaahta hai

Kamal Barot sounding a little bit like a high-pitched Leslie Gore,
This song always remind me of….”It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to, You would cry too… if it happened to you….” By Lesley Gore, super hit song #1 in 1963.
