Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Chandrma madbhara

Posted on: March 2, 2012

Most music lovers listen to standard commonly heard music. Then some music lovers decide to explore and search for previously unheard of music.

In these days of internet connectivity and music hosting sites, one can come across gems if one decides to explore. I come across “new” songs almost on a regular basis. Other regular music lovers also stumble upon such gems regularly.

Here is what Khyati Bhatt, a fellow stumbler stumbled upon. On hunch, she decided to listen to this song despite being totally unaware of its details. And she was rewarded with this fabulous melody.

Here is this wonderful song from “Patrani” (1956). The song is sung by Lata. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Sarod gets played prominently in the music of this song. It appears that some prominent sarod player was employed to play the instrument for this song.

“Patrani” (1956) is a by now forgotten historical/mythological movie which was Produced by Vijay Bhatt and directed by Shankarbhai Bhatt. Starcast of the movie had names like Pradeep Kumar, Vyjyantimala,Shashikala, Durga Khote, David, Jeevan, Om Prakash, Praveen Paul etc in it.

From the starcast, it would appear that the song is picturised on Vyjyanti Mala.

Here is this wonderful song, whose lyrics were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Chandrma madbhara (Patrani)(1956) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

chandrma madbhara
kyun jhoome baadar mein
woh khushi
ab kahaan
mujh birhan ke ghar mein

jab se roothhe balam hamaare
roothhe tab se bhaag hamaare
lag gaya rog jigar mein chandrma
lag gaya rog jigar mein chandrma
lag gaya rog jigar mein
kyun jhoome baadar mein

ek to birhan kal na paawe
upar se tu aag lagaawe
jaa bas aur nagar mein chandrma
ja bas aur nagar mein chandrma
ja bas aur nagar mein
kyun jhoome baadar mein
woh khushi
ab kahaan
mujh birahan ke ghar mein
aa aa

Do you know who played the sarod in this song? Is it by Amjad Ali Khan?
Since Patrani is new to this blog, Can’t wait to read your detail info on this historical movie.

Atul ji,
PATRANI-1956 was supposed to be a Historical film, but there is no base for its story in real History. As I said once,Historical movies in India are most of the times’Distortical’ movies, either being imaginary or bent for cinematic liberty.
A Prakash picture’s film (actually they were known for Mythological films),it was directed by Vijay Bhatt, its owner himself. The story,Dialogues and S/play was by R.S.Chaudhary.The music was by Shankar-Jaikishen and their asst. in this film was Lallubhai Naik, who played Sarod in this film music.(Khyati ji,your answer pl.)
King Karnadev Solanki, king of Gujrat(Pradeep Kr.) had many queens but no issues. The Rajmata(Durga Khote) insisted that he marry another girl after ascertaining astrologically her capability to give children.
The king had seen one princess in Somanath temple once and wants to marry only her.But he does not know who she is.Actually she is princess Mrinal(Vyjayanti Mala) daughter of King Jai keshi(Ramesh Sinha) of Karnatak. She was on a Teerth yatra when she saw Karnadev. She also wanted to only marry him,but did not know who he was.
Munjal Mehta (David),Mahamantri of Karndev goes on a mission and soon finds out Mrinal. She is beautiful, but her skin becomes black in the sunlight.Munjal knows Karndev’s dislike of black.mrinal is astrologically also fit.He tells her and shows the sketch of Karndev, after which she is happily ready to marry him.
They all travel to Gujrat, but during travel Mrinal’s skin becomes black.During marriage, there is a veil, but after marriage Karndev sees that she is black and rejects her.
She is good natured and becomes Raj mata’s pet. When the King falls sick, mrinall serves him very well and slowly the King realises that outer skin colour does not make a person good or bad.He accepts her as she is and all is well that ends well.

Thanks a lot for the detailed description of this movie.

Thanks Arunji for the detail on movie and sarod player. I have read the actual novel written by Shri Kanaiyalal Munshi (or Kulapati Dr. K.M.Munshi – who founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan). Novel is one of the best in Gujarati literature, but like you have said, they must have changed the story to make it more dramatic.
