Jeene ka agar andaaz aaye

Posted on: March 8, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Ravi’s debut film was Vachan (1955) but I first came to know about him through the songs of Chaudhvin Ka Chaand) (1960). He was music director for many successful films like Gumrah (1963), Waqt (1965), Khandaan (1965) Do Badan (1965), Kaajal(1965), Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Aankhen (1968) to quote a few. He was one of the popular music directors of Hindi films produced in the South. He wrote the popular song ‘cat mane billi’ for Dilli Ka Thug (1958). From 70s onwards, his musical assignments started declining and by later part of 80s, he was almost retired from the Hindi film industry. With his demise, we have lost one more veteran music director of the golden era of Hindi filmsongs.

May his soul rest in peace.

I had earmarked a song composed by Ravi for discussion but postponed it as I have some bias to discuss the songs of 40s and 50s in preference to the songs of 60s onwards. As our tribute to the departed soul, I felt that I should discuss this song right now.

The song is ‘jeene ka agar andaaz aaye to kitni haseen hai zindagi’ from the film (Ye Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai )(1966). The film was produced and directed by R K Nayyar and the star cast included Ashok Kumar, Joy Mukherjee, Saira Banu, Motilal, Saeeda Khan and Badri Prasad. The song was written by Rajendra Krishan and set to music by Ravi. I had heard of this film and also heard this song many years back but completely forgot about them. It was only a few days back that I came across this song on YT and I liked it immensely for its lyrics, sombre rendition and simple music composition. Asha Bhonsle has once again proved that she is the master of all genre of songs. Unfortunately, the film did not click on the box office and with that this beautiful song was forgotten.

The video clip contains full song but some words get jumped whereas in audio clip, one stanza is excluded. I have given both these links.

Lyrics

aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa

jeene ka agar andaaz aaye
to kitni haseen hai zindagi
jeene ka agar andaaz aaye
to kitni haseen hai zindagi
marne ke liye jeena hai agar
to kuchh bhi nahin hai zindagi

kuchh log yahaan phoolon ki jagah
kaanton ki tamannaa kartey hain
kuchh log yahaan phoolon ki jagah
kaanton ki tamannaa kartey hain
jeete hai naa jeene dete hain
hasti ko wo ruswaa kartey hain
hasti ko wo ruswaa kartey hain
jeene ka agar andaaz aaye
to kitni haseen hai zindagi
marne ke liye jeena hai agar
to kuchh bhi nahin hai zindagi

shabnam ki chamak sooraj ki kiran
kaliyon ki hansi dekhi hi nahin
shabnam ki chamak suraj ki kiran
kaliyon ki hansi dekhi hi nahin
ye zindagi kitni dilkash hai
afsos kabhi dekhi hi nahin
afsos kabhi dekhi hi nahin
jeene ka agar andaaz aaye
to kitni haseen hai zindagi
marne ke liye jeena hai agar
to kuchh bhi nahin hai zindagi

ye jeena bhi koi jeena hain
jeete bhi rahen marte bhi rahen
ye jeena bhi koi jeena hain
jeete bhi rahen marte bhi rahen
auron ke to jaan ke dushman thhe
aur maut se khud ladte hi rahen
aur maut se khud ladte hi rahen
jeene ka agar andaaz aaye
to kitni haseen hai zindagi
marne ke liye jeena hai agar
to kuchh bhi nahin hai zindagi

I am so sorry to hear of the demise of Ravi. I had heard that he was a master composer of ghazals and in a live programme he asked the audience to give him any ghazal. He then sang the ghazal is five/six different tunes on the spur of the moment with his orchestra! He was a fine man too. He dropped ‘Shankar’ from his name at the request of Ravi Shankar, the world famous sitarist who was also active at that time as a film music director!
