Chaand takta hai idhar

Posted on: March 17, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

As my age advances, I have started realising that I am recalling memories of my childhood and younger days much better than before. The flip side is that I tend to get forgetful or absent-minded in respect of my immediate past events. While the old days’ remembrance can be nostalgic and some time makes me emotional, the positive side is that I have started remembering some of the old Hindi films songs which I had completely forgotten for many years. But here is a catch which places me in a piquant situation. In some cases, I just remember the tune of a song and not the starting words or in an other way round, I remember the starting words but struggle to get to the tune of the song. Obviously, I have no inkling about the names of the films concerning these songs.

While in the latter cases, I can still get to lay my hands on the songs by searching on YT, it is in respect of the former cases where only providence can lead me to the songs. I feel very miserable when I am not able to get to the words of a song of which I know the starting tune. A few months back, while searching for some songs, I stumbled upon a couple of songs by sheer coincidence where I had the tunes in my memory but not the starting words. I can tell from my experience that getting to know such songs after a long time is bliss. Incidentally, the songs were ‘lout gayaa gham ka zamaanaa – Naya Aadmi (1957) and ‘saanwle salone aaye din bahaar ke’ – Ek Hi Raasta (1956).

A few days back, I suddenly remembered a tune of a song without knowing its wordings. Apparently, I could not lay my hand on the song immediately. But in this case, I was lucky to get the song on YT within a short time, again by providence. Last week, I came across on YT, an interesting caption of the song ‘chhand taktaa hai idhar aao kahin chhup jaayen’. What a romantic line – privacy from the moon!. Thinking that the song must be an interesting one too, I listened to the song. What a coincidence! It was the same song which I was humming without knowing the words. This duet song sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Rafi was written by none other than Sahir Ludhinavi and set to music by Roshan.

This song is from the film DOOJ KA CHAAND (1964). The film was produced under the banner of Film Asia and directed by Nitin Bose. The star cast included Ashok Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, B Saroja Devi, Chandrashekhar, Ratna, Iftekhar etc. The film has some good songs, two of which have already been discussed in the blog. I have not been able to locate the video clip of this song though video clips of almost all other songs are available on the YT. Either I may have missed the video clip or this song may have been deleted from the film or VCD version. So only the audio clip is available. I request the knowledgeable readers to apprised of the fate of this song in the film or VCD.

I love Sahir’s poetic imagination in this song which has been admirably captured by the singers as well as by Roshan’s melodious tune.

Lyrics

chaand taktaa hai idhar
chaand taktaa hai idhar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
kahin laage naa nazar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
chaand takta hai idhar

phool shaakon se jhuke jaatey hain honthon ki taraf
phool shaakon se jhuke jaatey hain honthon ki taraf
jhonke bal khaa ke mude aatey hain
o o
mude aatey hain zulfon ki taraf
aa aa aa
chhod kar unki dagar
chhod kar unki dagar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
kahin laage naa nazar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
chaand taktaa hai idhar

main hi main dekhoon sajan
doojaa naa dekhe tohe
main hi main dekhoon sajan
doojaa naa dekhe tohe
kaa khabar kaun sautaniyaa toraa
o sautaniyaa toraa man mohe

o o o
dil pe daalo naa asar
dil pe daalo naa asar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
chaand taktaa hai idhar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
chaand taktaa hai idhar

saari nazron se parey
saare nazaaron se parey
saari nazron se parey
saare nazaaron se parey
aasmaanon pe chamkte huye
o o
chamkate huye taaron se parey
aa aa aa
odh kar laal chunar
odh kar laal chunar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
kahin laage naa nazar
aao kahin chhup jaayen
