During 1950s and 1960s, there used to be quite a few movies with the word “ustaad” in them. This blog have had songs from movies viz “Do Ustaad” (1959), “Ustaadon Ke Ustaad” (1963), “Ustaad 420” (1963), “Ham Sab Ustaad Hain” (1965),”Sab Ka Ustaad” (1967) etc but the movie with the defining word in them, viz “Ustaad” was not among them.

I have mentioned it in the past that I did not like “old” songs when I was young. Those days (1970s), anything more than five years old was old for me. Today, I love listening to songs that are fifty, sixty and sometimes even seventy years old. Things have changed. I would like to believe that I have “matured”. This song is one that I thought I had already discussed in the blog. The first time I became aware of O P Nayyar was in mid 1970s, when I read about him in a Hindi magazine (Dharmyug, perhaps, where it was mentioned that he made a successful career for himself without using Lata Mangewshkar’s voice even once). This got by curiosity roused. I found out that “Naya Daur” (1957) was a breakthrough movie for him as well as for many others associated with the movie. Ao I became aware of all the songs of this movie. One can see the lyrics of several songs from this movie noted down in a a diary where I used to note down the lyrics of songs that I liked those days. One can say that my diary showed which songs I liked in 1970s. And I liked the songs of “Naya Daur” (1957).

This article is written by Khyati Bhatt, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Hindi Cinema has given us the treasure of so many melodious singers who never restricted their ability only for the movie songs. The list includes K.L.Saigal, Pankaj Mulick, Jagmohan, C.H.Atma, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd.Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood, Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar( which is something new to me and thanks to Arunji for that info) and may be few more.
