Jaan e jaan dhoondhta phir rahaa

on:Watching old Hindi movies (and its songs) is a good way to look back at the past and see how things were back then. Another way of looking back at the past is by going through the publications of those days.
I recall that I was an avid reader of books in my younger days, viz 1970s. I would read each and every book, whether they were meant for kids or grown ups. In addition to being an avid reader, I was an avid collectors of children’s magazines in Hindi. The children’s magazines in Hindi those days used to be “Bal Bhatri”, “Nandan”,”Champak”,”Parag”, “Lotpot”, Chandamama”, “Indrajaal Comics” etc. You name the children’s magazines and I collected them. I not only collected them, I catalogued them systematically too. They were my prized possessions. I would not be averse to get hold of magazines not in my collection, but I would be quite reluctatnt to lend my magazines to others, because the likelihood of the borrower returning the book were remote in most cases. One needed to pester the borrower hard, sometimes by visiting his home, before one could get your book back.
Unfortunately, my parents did not share my enthusiasm for these books. The enviable collection of magazines that I had were donated to others, first because they were occupying lots of space, and secondly, in the mistaken belief that they were helping in educating others by offering them these books. I personally saw these books lying around on the floors of some of these people. When I thried to pick them up and bring back, I was prevented from doing so by my mother.
The loss of these beloved possessions of mine left a deep scar in my mind and I have not fully recovered from this loss despite the passage of nearly four decade. From that time onwards, I actually found my mental faculties, so sharp till then, take a nosedive. Till then, I had such wonderful memory that I recalled all the stories published in all these magazines. And when I would go to watch movies, I could read the entire starcast that rolled on the screen, without missing a word and remember them. And I could memorise the longest and the most difficult English poems quickly. I lost all these mental abilities. That is how badly I was scarred. Not that elders in those days cared for the sentiments of kids.
In these days of internet, some kind souls, who still have the collections of these magazines with them are uploading these magazines for the reading pleasures of likeminded people. I am as likeminded as any. During the last few days I read a few back issues of “Parag”. These back issues were from 1960s, which were before my time, since I began buying “Parag” from 1973 onwards.
While going through the back issues, I was magically transported back to my childhood. It was interesting to read about the topics that were then current. And it was extremely intersting to go through the advertisements of those days.
When I watch the picturisation of this song, I am likewise reminded of 1970s. The song was extremely popular, as this song blared regularly from loudspeakers and were also played on Radio Ceylon. Many people watched the movie and also the picturisation. I did not get to watch the movie though I would have dearly loved to watch, because the music of this song served as the biggest advertisement for the movie.
Watching the movie and /or the song nearly four decades later and forming one’s opinion is not the same as experiencing it first hand in 1972. If one watches it now, one will be amused at the fact that a grown up college going Jaya Bhaduri constantly holds a big doll with her. I wonder if those who watched the movie at that time were similarly amused. I do not think so. Jaya Bhaduri had played the title role of a school going girl in “Guddi” (1971) just a year ago and the makers of “Jawaani Deewaani” (1972) may have thought that showing her clutching a doll may help the cause of the movie. The movie was a big hit, but it was more because of music that any other reason.
Randhir Kapoor was the hero of this movie and he in fact appeared like the future big hero of Hindi movies those days alongwith Navin Nischol. It will be interesting to read what the movie magazines of those days had to say about the prospects of the various newcomers of Hindi movies. It should make for very interesting reading indeed.
Here is a duet from “Jawaani Deewaani” (1972). It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bhaduri. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
jaan e jaan
dhoondhta phir raha
hoon tumhe raat din
main yahaan se wahaan
jaan e jaan
aaa
dhoondhta phir raha
aaa
hoon tumhe raat din
aaa
main yahaan se wahaan
mujhko aawaaz do
aaa
chhup gaye ho sanam
tum kahaan
main yahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan
jaan e jaan
dhoondhta phir raha
hoon tumhe raat din
main yahaan se wahaan
o mere humsafar
pyaar ki raah par
saath chalen hum magar
kya khabar
o mere humsafar
haan
pyaar ki raah par
haan
saath chalen
aa aa
hum magar
aa aa
kya khabar
raaste mein kahin
rahe gaye humnasheen
tum kahaan
main yahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan
jaan e jaan
dhoondhti phir rahi
hoon tumhe raat din
main yahaan se wahaan
mujhko aawaaz do
chhup gaye ho sanam
tum kahaan
main yahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan
dil machalne laga
yoon hi dhalne laga
rangbhara pyaar ka
ye samaa
dil machalne laga
he ae
yunhi dhalne laga
he ae
rangbhara
he ae
pyaar ka ye samaa
haath aise mein bas
chhod kar chal diye
tum kahaan
main yahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan
jaan e jaan
aaa
dhoondhta phir raha
aaa
hoon tumhen raat din
main yahaan se wahaan
paas ho tum khade
mere dil mein chhupe
aur mujhe
kuchh pata na chala
paas ho tum khade
aa aa
mere dil mein chhupe
aa aa
aur mujhe
aa aa
kuchh pata
aa aa
na chala
dil mein dekha nahin
dekha sara jahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan
jaan e jaan
aaa
dhoondhta phir raha
aaa
hoon tumhe raat din
aaa
main yahan se wahaan
mujhko aawaaz do
chhup gaye ho sanam
tum kahaan
main yahaan
tum kahaan
main yahaan

Same feeling from my side also.
Main aapke hi tribe ka aadmi hoon – inn maagzines aur kitaabon ko collect karne ke baare mein.
My mother, brothers don`t like my this habbit(as this collection habbit of mine occupies much space in the house aur hamara ghar bhi tab bahut chhota tha), Main sirf bachhon ke(Chandamama etc)hi nahin, other magazines ko bhi collect kartha tha.
Jab main kaam milne ke baad Bangalore mein 1,2 saal raha, tab mere chhote bhai ne sab magazines ko dheemak lagne ka bahaana karke(is baare mein, ab bhi, main mere bhai se bahut naraaz hoon-sachchi mein dheemak laga gaya tha yaa ghar mein space bachaane ke liye mere anmol magazins ke collection ko bech diyaa gaya hai, main sure nahin hoon)Mere maa ke zamane ka hindi mein likha gaya hand written aur printed filmi gaanon ka bahut badaa collections sab ussi mein chalaa gayaa. Chaahne par bhi main unn Hindi filmi geethon ka anmol khazaanaa haasil kar nahin saktaa.
While reading your post, I remembered my loss. Ab bhi mere aur mere maa ke beech iss baare mein jhagdaa hotaa rehthaa hai. Anth mein main hi maa se haar maankar chhupp rehthaa hoon. She is very much strict about cleanliness of home and optimum utilisation of space in the house.
But aisa maan kar main chhupp rehthaa hoon ke maa sab kuchch mere achche ke liye hi karthi hai and most of the times that belief of mine proved right for me. Par mere woh Hindi filmi gaanon ka Kitaabein, main kahaan dhoondoon ??????

I don’t know how many times I have seen this movie. It was fabulous. I had written down all the songs of this movie in a notebook. It was shot extensively in Bangalore, and I was living in Bangalore at the time, so it was fun to recognize the landmarks. I don’t have any idea where this song was shot, however.
This song is an old old favorite. Thanks for posting it, Atul.
